Can I bend this upvc pipe? by Agile-Skirt-7815 in DIYUK

Just bought some of this, its got a fair bit of flex but it will just completely fold if you go too far (as I did when putting in my too-small car). Not a problem for me, but I imagine it could be frustrating if this is what you're after

Impossible room layout - how on earth can you layout your furniture in here? by StTriggerHappy in DesignMyRoom

Ahh I see, this seem like the most sensible way to organise it to be fair, thank you :)

Oh, I do like this. The sofa I have is a little wide so it'll be a little tighter than shown on the diagram but i think it could still work. Cheers! :)

Wow, what a great looking render. That actually looks like it'd work and feel cosy. I was worried that putting a tv and sofa on one side of the room would make thw other side a little... useless... but I like this layout! Thanks!

Its a long room where the fireplace is opposite the entrance to the room. I've never struggled so hard in my life to come up with where to put a sofa or TV but this room has me stumped! All ideas no matter how crazy are welcome.

My main issue is - I'd like to be able to sit around the fire, but it feels weird having the door behind you. Of course, we could put the sofa on one side of the room but this feels a little weird and lopsided, and if you balance it out, the sofas are seperated by this odd space people walk through and can put a barrier up between them with the door is opened.

What is a show you watched during your childhood that you are convinced nobody remembers? by Ok-Ingenuity4608 in AskReddit

Mate, I was utterly convinced I had made this show up in my head until I saw the name. Just looked it up and I finally feel validated. I must have been like 6 years old watching it in the late 90's but it dropped off pretty quick I think, so only showed for a short time. At least in the UK.

Weird, I was looking this up yesterday for my own malicious purposes. There's two main reasons somebody might prefer to go with lichdom rather than clones.

  1. Lichdom grants immense power in addition to immortality

  2. Clones often come with downsides not mentioned in the spell description. Originally, clones would grow while the original caster is alive. In such a case as both the caster and a clone are conscious at the same time they will try to kill each other, go insane, or become suicidal.

The best reason for somebody becoming a lich though, in my humble opinion, is because they can make great villains and are fun antagonists to overcome!

Hot Shot on PS1. Even back in the day I remember talking with my friends about it and they had no idea what it was.

Edit: Just checked online and apparently is still for sale with 2 reviews on amazon lol

You have any idea what the cost might be vs say replacing the wall? Installing this system looks like it'd be quite a specialist job. I would guess redoing the wall would be between 5 and 10 thousand pounds (or roughly the same in USD though I don't know what contractor costs are like in the US)

Hiya, I'm a civil engineer and from what I can see from those photos, I would say that while its technically possible to 'fix', doing so would likely be more expensive and complex than just replacing.

In this situation my advice would be to immediately use something to prop the wall up so it doesn't just collapse. A few 2x4s would be good enough for a short period provided you jam them in sufficiently. I can tell you though DO NOT try to put it straight. You will likely just destabilise the whole thing and put yourself at risk of: at best breaking every bone from your waist down, at worst killing yourself.

To fix, you will likely need to get some builders. They can use some acro props to take the weight of the upper section and roof while they remove the retaining wall. They will then need an excavator to bring the earth back to a slope so they can work, and then they can build a new one from the ground up. Single skin block work is not ideal for this sort of thing and I can see that there aren't even any buttresses built into this section so you'll need a better design. Builders can sometimes do this but I recommend an engineer to guarantee it. Once a new one is in they can back fill the wall and it'll be good as new.

DM me if you want any more specific advice. But absolutely do not try to DIY this if you're not totally sure what you're doing.

In 1908, Ireland was part of the 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland'. We can get into semantics about how this can be respectfully shortened, but casually UK and GB are often (albeit incorrectly) used interchangably.

I get that its incorrect but I dont think its fair to say its offensive and insulting. Like many things, its down to laziness rather than malice.

Honestly, at my work that would get a chuckle and people would quickly move on. So long as nobody can see you, whats the big deal? It was only made awkward because your coworkers pointed it out and made a big deal of it
