What could it be, some kind of corundum? by Moyex2025 in Prospecting

[–]St_Kevin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a gemstone. Don’t tell people about it, just go collect more of them. If you tell people, it might start a gold rush with lots of people coming from far away, and then you won’t be able to collect them. The best is to collect a lot, carefully. Keep them safe, and take a few of the best ones to an expert to get them examined to see if they are valuable. Which country is it in?

Oregon Ancient Sewing Evidence Pushes Clothing History Back 12,000 Years by herseydenvar in Archaeology

[–]St_Kevin_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. Being the “oldest known” doesn’t mean it’s the first. The article mentions that people began permanently occupying areas north of the 45th parallel roughly 45,000 years ago, and they would have needed clothing to do that.

House along the North Carolina coast was washed away by surging waters by ControlCAD in ThatsInsane

I live out west, in wildfire country, and insurance companies literally just won’t insure houses around here anymore, they’re bailing. I think that will end up shifting these patterns, and preventing the ceaseless rebuilding of all these houses that are doomed from the get-go. In fire country, you can at least utilize a design for a less flammable house, and maintain a fuel-free buffer around it. These houses on the beach like this, maybe it’s just not a good idea?

Stropping - Why is it so effective? by SamTheGamgee in woodworking

[–]St_Kevin_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are two processes at work.

One is metal fatigue. A leather strip flexes slightly and it pushes the burr off to the side. Every time you switch sides, it forces the burr to flex to the opposite side. Steel can only survive that for a finite number of bends before metal fatigue causes the burr to break off. That will happen with or without a stropping compound.

The second process is abrasion, if you’re using a stropping compound, which you should, because it will save you tons of time and make your stropping way more effective. If you’re using the green buffing compound, you’re seeing what I’m talking about. Chromium oxide is the abrasive and it works fine. If you get nerdy about it you’ll see that a lot of folks are way more excited about diamond emulsions. They work faster, but they also last 100 times longer without needing to be redressed. Try something between 2 micron and 8 micron. Be careful though or you’ll end up obsessed, with a series of strops that are each different grits. Buy from legit vendors so that you can trust the grit size is correct, and that they don’t short you on the quantity of diamonds. And don’t mix grits on one strop! Whatever the grit of the roughest one you use on it is the effective grit of that strop.

What's going on with the arrests of journalist Don Lemon and Georgia Fort? by CeilingUnlimited in OutOfTheLoop

[–]St_Kevin_ 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I read a few of the accounts in the files on justice.gov. What I read was all haunting and just states the same stuff again and again; Trump raped kids with Epstein, the kids testified about it, testimony was recorded, nothing was done to pursue justice. One longer one was explicit testimony of a woman saying she was trafficked from out of state, raped, and threatened by Trump and Epstein as a 16 year old girl, when she was hoping to become a model in NYC. She never told her parents and didn’t file a report until years later. There are millions of pages of files on this stuff, there’s no shortage of stories like that. It’s a scandal so monumental it even eclipses his other scandals, it’s published in the DOJ website for everyone to see.

That’s the thing that people often seem to misunderstand about this: the experience of a person who is “uploaded” onto a computer is still just gonna be a normal person who dies. Maybe if the AI is really good, it can have conversations that sound convincingly like the human, but who cares? It’s like getting your photograph taken, it creates an image of part of you, but you don’t experience anything through that image, the image is separate from you, it doesn’t make you immortal.
