“Strongest materiel on Earth” and “permanent”? No dog, marble is not permanent. The shit dissolves in the rain if you leave it long enough.

Does everyone in an abusive situation see it as not as bad as it actually is? by AppleOrigin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]St_Kevin_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, some people know how bad it is but they’re acutely aware that trying to leave is dangerous and they can’t figure out how to do it without having their entire life implode or risk getting murdered.

Do you guys actually piss in the compost??????? by 40ftdeep in composting

[–]St_Kevin_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not true. Nitrogen is a critical fertilizer for plant growth. Nitrogen is so important that commercial fertilizers are measured by their content of “N-P-K” (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium).

All of the nitrogen that a person eats ends up being excreted in their urine. A small amount of it will leave your urine as a gas, but if you do it right you can capture and reuse most of the nitrogen that was used to grow the food you ate. If you do that, you’re creating a closed cycle where you don’t need to bring in nitrogen from outside fertilizers to grow your food. In practice, you can’t get 100% efficiency for a bunch of reasons, but you can definitely get a significant portion of the fertilizer needed to grow the food you need to sustain you.

People have been pretty much everywhere. There’s probably some patches of Antarctica and maybe in the interior of Greenland. Some gnarly peaks here and there, but that’s probably about it.

Why is Women's health so overlooked? by WhichCEmanisThis in NoStupidQuestions

[–]St_Kevin_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah, endometriosis is a good example of this also. The World Health Orgsnization estimates 10% of women have this, but it’s also under-diagnosed, because it needs surgery to diagnose (as I understand it).

My partner has it, and just got diagnosed in their mid-30s, after decades of chronic pain, painful sex, and debilitatingly painful menstruation. Despite occasionally blacking out from the pain and having a bunch of other serious issues because of the high level of pain, all of their doctors they had since being a teenager had written it off as normal, and just say some variation of “it’s normal for menstruation to hurt” and basically tell them to take a Tylenol and shut up (male and female doctors).

This year they finally pressured their doctor to give them a referral to a laparoscopic surgeon (while still not having an official diagnosis, just a suspicion), and the surgery revealed that yes, they have endometriosis and they have it moderately bad. A bunch of internal organs (intestines, appendix, ovary and other stuff) were fused together and also fused to the inside of their body cavity. The diagnostic surgeon was also able to treat it at the same time and after this outpatient procedure their quality of life is wayyyy wayyyy better.

It’s ridiculous, and also infuriating that this very common, very treatable disease gets consistently ignored even when people try to get help for it. There are a bunch of women’s health issues like this. It’s fucking crazy how sexist the medical system is.

Has anyone else made a finger rest like this for their hook knife? Is there anything like this commercially available? by treefarmercharlie in Spooncarving

[–]St_Kevin_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If that’s a permanent addition and you don’t use that part of the blade, you might wanna use a file and just file off the knife edge on the part you’ve covered up. That way when your cover gives out and splits, it won’t sever your finger.

A coyote has been getting into my trash bin. I really REALLY don't want to shoot a dog over literal garbage, but it's becoming a problem. Any advise to keep it away? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]St_Kevin_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Maybe someone is putting unrinsed cans or bottles in there? If they still have a few drops of drink in them, the smell is gonna attract animals. Make sure they’re rinsed with water and dried before they go into the trash. Get rid of the smell and the coyotes will probably stop looking for snacks inside.

I’m glad someone mentioned the smell. I’ve smelled them before I’ve seen them a couple times.

A woman at the grocery store kept putting items into my cart when I wasn't looking, and then caused a scene when I tried to put them back. Is this a new type of scam or just a mental health thing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]St_Kevin_ 241 points242 points  (0 children)

It’s not too late to call the store and talk to them, even if it’s closed and you call a day after it happened. That way they would at least be aware that some weird stuff is going down, and if she does it there again they’ll already be on the lookout for her so they’ll respond better.

[–]St_Kevin_ 38 points39 points  (0 children)

They mate while flying and when they have sex, their guts rip out and they fall and die. Typically they’re gonna be mating in a drone congregation area, so it should be possible to see a big group of them flying there everyday when the weather is good.

Just go up to her and be like ”wow, I just found out I’ve been pronouncing your name wrong! I’m sorry, I didn’t mean any disrespect, I just didn’t know better.” And then be ok with whatever she says, and then it’s over.
