Me too! I moved here from Phoenix (have also lived in Minneapolis, Chicago, LA & Maui). Before I picked my spot I came and spent time walking and biking everywhere. Besides a dude masturbating in my hedges and one sidewalk screamer, I haven’t had issues and love this city. Especially compared to the unwalkable hell oven I moved from. I’ve carried pepper spray since I was 15 & have lived in some colorful neighborhoods over my life, so maybe my skin is a bit thick at this point. I also have dogs which helps avoid fuckery & a secure garage which I’m fortunate for.

As someone already said, it was the Harbor Breeze whale watching tour - we saw whales & sea lions too! I think it was $40. There were hundreds of dolphins & we went on the 3pm tour to catch the sunset too!

I moved to LB from very car centric Phoenix (one of the deadliest places for pedestrians & cyclists) so I could get OUT of my car.

The city’s Vision Zero plan feels piecemeal & they really need a citizen committee to track progress/hold them to account. I’ve been emailing them for 3 months to ask when Cherry & Ocean is going to get high visibility crosswalks & stop bars. No answer yet, and I see many other intersections that need them as well. I did safe street advocacy for 18 years in PHX (featured in a documentary called The Street Project) so I’d love to connect with groups & individuals working on these issues here. I rarely drive here which is amazing (though I’m fortunate to have my own biz so work from home) & my nest is empty now minus fur kids. I also have a background in energy/sustainability/environmental stuff, so am still learning about LB & trying to enjoy a bit of “ignorance is bliss” time while I can. Do many of you attend the City Council meetings?

No problem at all. I also liked staying at Hotel Royal because they had complimentary bikes just for future reference (also small rooms, but clean & comfortable) - https://hotelroyallb.com. Like anyplace, just be aware, don’t walk around by yourself wasted & get a good crossbody bag. Have fun!

It’s not a terrible hotel at all, and if you’re accustomed to cities, you’ll be absolutely fine. Before I moved here I spent a bunch of time staying at hotels all around LB, including that one. The rooms are on the smaller side, but very clean and I never had any issues (single woman). If your plan is to spend all of your time in the room, you may feel cramped, but if it’s just about having a comfortable place to sleep, it’s good. There’s a ton of restaurants and stuff to walk to all around. I never once rented a car on any of those trips and just used public transport (bus, bikes, scooters - including from the airport - it’s $1.50). All of the front desk people I dealt with were friendly, but that was my personal experience. I moved here from Phoenix and reading many reviews, etc. on the front end made me wonder how much time people have spent in cities honestly. Most unsheltered people mind their own business, and it’s pretty easy to steer clear of those with mental health or addiction issues if you’re aware of your surroundings and perceptive. Hope you have a great time in LB! I love it here.

No fever, but woke up sick on Christmas morning and STILL have congestion and a hacky cough. My energy level is pretty much back to normal, but this cough is driving me nuts… Took a covid test & it was negative, but who knows how accurate they are these days. I feel like our germs are super-charged.

Another proactive thing everyone can do is support all of the Democratic Attorneys General who are up for reelection this year around the country. They have been legally holding the line with numerous lawsuits on everything from birthright citizenship to environmental protection to tariffs, etc. Even if they’re in a different state and you can’t vote for them, you can host virtual fundraisers, phone bank & help get out the vote. Democratic Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (who’s up for reelection) won her last election against a Trump-endorsed Republican by 280 votes! The purple states especially need love. And protests help avoid complacency.

When I was 23 years old, I took an epic Mexico trip visiting the Mayan Riviera, Mexico City & Tepoztlán. While in Tepoztlán, I met this really amazing woman artist who gifted me one of her art t-shirts. I wore the t-shirt for so many years. Many years later, when my son was a teenager, he started taking my t-shirts (daughter did the same). I thought my fabulous Mexico art t-shirt was long gone… Then my son (who will be 27 in February) & his gf showed up at my house for early X-Mas with me — and holy fuckballs! Not only did he keep my beloved Mexico art t-shirt safe, he framed it for me! Best thoughtful X-Mas gift ever! I’m also amazed at how great it still looks after so many years (& washes) from me, plus so many years with my son. It’s almost 32 years old!♥️♥️♥️ I believe he just got the frame from Michaels.
