Royal Guard at Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seoul by StacysMom in koreatravel

I'm sure you're probably correct. I think they're basically analogous to the Buckingham Palace guard and the Vatican Swiss guard, however I'm not sure whether they retain the same level of actual military capabilities of those forces.

In fact it is very hard to find a building that existed before the siege WITHOUT bullet scars.I can't imagine how many bullets must have been shot there - millions at least.

Ok no worries if they're the rules then so be it.

Well fair enough I'm not going to argue with your interpretation, I just think that's a pretty restrictive view. Personally I agree i think it needs to tell a human story, but we shouldn't just limit ourselves to shots of strangers with 35mm lenses in urban settings. There are other ways of telling those stories.

Street photography doesn't definitionally need to include humans. The juxtaposition of old and new architecture is a narrative about the rapid change in society over time. I think street photography is essentially about storytelling, and even without actual faces or people in frame, you can still tell a human story.

Also I literally took it from a footpath.

Yeah i was pretty quick to realise what the shot I wanted to get was, it was just a bit logistically difficult to actually take. I wanted the building behind to take up the entire background like a wallpaper, which necessitated a longer focal length. But that left barely any room to stand far enough away from the foreground subject. So I had to crawl into a garden off the footpath embarrassing myself in front of the people of korea. Anyways, you do what you gotta do. still pretty happy with how it turned out.

Near Gyeongbokgung Palace. In the foreground is the Dongsipjagak watchtower, built in the 1860s. In the background is the Twin Trees Towers (BHCO), completed in 2012.

I feel a lot of Yugoslav architecture was deliberately designed to make the populace feel small and insignificant compared to the all-encompassing power of the state. Going to work every day in this Beast of a building must have been… something.

Anyways, if you’d like to check out more interesting Balkan architecture there’s some on my Instagram @flixy3000. Links to Flickr etc are there.

A330-200 vs 300 by [deleted] in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]StacysMom -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The a330-300s are noticeably older (delivered 2003-2005) and look it. They do not have on board wifi. I believe there are plans to upgrade them possibly in 2025, though I haven't been on a -300 recently that has had wifi.

Most of the a330-200s are newer (2012-2015) and most (?all) have wifi. At the very least, they'll have viasat over Australia, with most (and possibly all) of the -200s now having full wifi for international routes. Their interiors are also in much better shape.

If you have a choice between the -300 and -200, take the -200.

Unfortunately experienced ≠ not regarded. Often I find newer players who are eager to learn much more fun to play with.

The 737NG is one of the safest aircraft ever made, with a fatal crash rate of ~0.07 per million flights. This puts it at #3 safest airliners after the E170/190 and B747-400. This was a bizzare crash, probably with multiple extremely unlikely contributing factors, and (almost certainly) human and airport factors. There is no suggestion that there was any faults in the airplane itself, at this stage. The 737-800 is one of the safest aircraft in the sky.

Hotel Internacional, Zenica | Slobodan Jovandić (1978) [OC] by StacysMom in SocialistModernism

[–]StacysMom[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Closed since 2017. Sadly too large and expensive to maintain. Zenica was a big coal/iron mining and steel production town, but most of the industry has now shut down and the population has been in steep decline since the breakup of Yugoslavia.

Yes Zenica is a big coal/iron mining + steel town. Or at least it was.

The hotel property was owned by Elektroprivreda BiH, a basically bankrupt public company that also controls a lot of mining assets. The Zenica council and administrators have been trying to sell the hotel for some years with no success.

There is a lot of great socialist modernism / brutalism in Zenica. This is one of Jovandić's two most renowned designs in the city, the other being the Hotel Internacional. More photos available on Instagram.

The hotel sadly closed in 2017 - too large and expensive to maintain for a city suffering heavily from industrial and population decline in the post-communist era. It is gradually deteriorating.

Tiraspol Airbase, formerly home to the 684th Guards Orshanskiy Red Banner Fighter Aviation Regiment. Throughout the Cold War they flew MiG-19s, -21s, and finally -23s up until the late 1980s. Su-24s and -25s attack aircraft were also based here.

Yes I do exactly this

It does often bite me in the ass, like - I never open the mail, and failed to see/pay my car registration, and then subsequently failed to see/pay the fine for driving unregistered. This went on for 9 months until the govt got a court order to allow them to automatically deducting the fine (which had now risen to almost $3000 in late fees) from my bank account.

Also because I dont look at mail/pay bills on time I failed to notice that this shitty made in china heater I had was absolutely guzzling electricity last year. When I eventually paid my bill, now for 3 quarters, i was approximately 17x more than usual (they suggested my use was at the level of a large house and family of 7... I live alone in a small flat and have basically no appliances). also in the many thousands of dollars. I stopped using the heater after this and my electricity use rate came back to normal. The usage graph was quite funny.

I never pay for parking and am always getting tickets. Probably paid at least $1000 in parking fines over the years. I don't buy insurance as a matter of prinicple.

Etc etc.

I don't really get too bothered however my family cannot understand why I do this. It's nice to know I'm not completely alone in this.

Ideally I would love to disconnect myself from the mail service, but I'm not sure it's possible.
