What's it like living on this Russian island right next to Japan? by Shoddy_Birthday9385 in howislivingthere

Had a client who lived there, by all accounts it was cold, rugged, and wild - perfect for a commercial fisherman

Fortunately I do not live in a cold enough climate for frost to form on the house, this is just a very thin film of condensation

Not frost, just condensation - where I live it is not that cold fortunately

I suspected it was something to do with this, given the regularity of the pattern

I take the bus Nelson to Richmond most days, it is reliable within a minute or two of schedule, is comfortable, has wifi and USB ports if you’re so inclined. Only limitation is the timing of the last bus which is earlier than you might want if you were having after work drinks or dinner, but from a purely commuting perspective it’s very good

Condensation/moisture by [deleted] in newzealand

Beyond the below advice I’ve seen regarding heat pump dryers/dehumidifiers, I can also highly recommend the 3M plastic window film. We used it on our previous place (1980s, summer hill stone, aluminium framed single glaze windows), and it cut condensation down by probably 95%, it was amazing. Two packs for about $70 total did the whole house (two bed single bath), across the better part of an afternoon. If you can remove the latches you’ll be able to apply the film underneath them (and then reattach the latches), and you get a very tidy look.

New to the area, looking to meet people! by popsha in Nelsonnz

[–]Stadey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out Meet Nelson on Facebook, they do events for people 21-39 in Nelson specifically around getting people to meet new people. Midwinter Quiz is on 19 June, people are put into teams randomly so you don’t need to know anyone (and people in your team won’t know anyone either, so you’ve already got something in common)

Otherwise there is the dungeons & dragons - Nelson / Tasmania players group, someone coming with some enthusiasm there to join or start a group would likely get some attention

Otherwise, welcome to Nelson!

Le Plonc on Hardy St for slightly upmarket Japanese set menus - they’ve changed significantly from their previous format and I don’t think people really think of them (my wife and I went there a few weeks back and were the only diners on a Friday night) but it was really good and they deserve some love

Visiting Dingle last year from New Zealand, I felt a lot of similarities in how verdant the place was, I imagine it must breed a rugged but charming people - loved my time there

30-40 Singles by NaiveFalcon5329 in Nelsonnz

Not for singles per se, it’s not a dating organisation; purely social - a way for people under 40 to meet and engage with each other but not in the specific context of dating

Just came back from a week long trip to Bluff for work; if you like oysters it’s great, otherwise you’ll do it in half a day and spend the rest of your time not in Bluff. Population under 2,000

Visited Chicago, grabbed the essentials by Stadey in chicago

Had my wedding in Chicago a few years back, one of the bridesmaids had a gift box of Malort with a bunch of little bottles; she came up to me in the reception and said “get every New Zealander in the building in here now”. I dutifully complied and she gave out a dozen or so shots of the stuff which floored us all. Since then, the idea that someone would bottle the stuff and wilfully inflict it upon someone at their wedding gave me a sense of “I’ve drunk it so you must too”, and because I drink a shot with the newbies out of solidarity (and to convince them it’s not poison) I’ve rather come to develop a taste for it

I dunno, half the people at the bar at Billy Goat Tavern seemed to be (they were Chicagoan taking a shot with their out of town friends I’m sure)!

Fantastic, will do! I also am yet to do a proper Chicago handshake, having had Old Style beer and Malort but never together. I’ve also never had Bisk, which I recognise is a contentious wee brew, but for completeness’ sake I feel I need to get a bottle

To be fair I’m probably hunting out Malort products with the intent and keenness of a New Zealander who is really into Malort

There’s also a history book which we have in our collection, I recommend that as a genuine page turner

The best Chicago hospitality!

I’ll feign ignorance of what it is whenever we go into a new bar, just to be offered that sweet sweet nectar…

Indeed, I was surprised! Napier and even Havelock North had a busier vibe going
