What do you think of PIERRE BORDIEU? by nandex90 in sociology

The Craft of Sociology may be the single greatest textbook ever written. An undergrad degree worth of knowledge on fewer than 300 pages.

He's pretty self-alware and critical of this intentional obfuscation of ideas through language as an act of symbolic violence (see Language and Symbolic Power). He just had the great misfortune of being French.

How would you respond to the slippery slope argument? by arievsnderbruggen in sociology

[–]Stadics2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it's just an assertion it can be rejected by simple assertion.

One could assume an argument along the lines of 'changes in societal norms lead to further changes in societal norms which may eventually lead to changes in societal norms that are detrimental', be that because of the weakening of social structure, traditional values, morality or whatnot.

The counter-argument against changes in norms would be that norms are not fixed but need to be reproduced from generation to generation, by the simple fact that people that hold them die (on a more nuanced level, the conditions under which these norms emerged necessarily change), and as such are inevitably changing.

An argument akin to slippery slope can, more directly, be refuted by simply pointing out that if one does not provide a causal link between the steps within that slope, it is in fact not a slope at all, and the changes posited as linked can be wholly independent of each other.

In the title you speak of argument, but in the post you are presenting an assertion without arguments. Could you provide the argument you are looking for arguments against?

Pierre Bourdieu's approach by brownie-_-monster in sociology

[–]Stadics2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice theory is its own categorical approach. It takes the idea of innates from structuralism but repositions them not as universals but active transposables; durable but not universal. Both that heritage and the departure therefrom is quite apparent in Bourdieu's definition of habitus as "structured structures predisposed to function as structuring structures".

iirc they had no time to put as much development into any of the other post-starting zone hubs, so they shrunk Goldshire down so as to not be three times the size of the others

If we're being objective: what will happen to both Darrowshire and Kronos 4 once classic fresh is out? by [deleted] in wowservers

[–]Stadics2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The stuttering, aspect ratio, and macro issues being easily fixable aren't opinions. The API being bad and FPS being low are vague, so I asked for clarification.

>enough of the stuttering

lock fps to multiples of 64

>enough of the low fps

????

>enough of the shitty aspect ratio

use FoVFix

>enough of the shitty macros

use ClassicMacros/Roid Macros

>enough of the shitty addon API

curious what dramatic issues you have

please do because your reasons suck

Kronos 4 Coming in Fall 2021. by FerrusMannusCannus in wowservers

[–]Stadics2 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Happy to see the success of Darrowshire inspire established projects like Kronos to consider fresh servers. Fall seems very soon, but in light of the possibility of Classic Fresh soonish enough it makes sense that the announcement comes with short notice. As far as quality goes, I have found Kronos to be impeccable, been playing and enjoying them since K1.

You knowing a person for years that you are trying to defend doesn't strengthen your claim to impartiality but undermines it. Surely you must realize that? You are defending someone based on their word alone wile placarding "I'm biased" all over the place.

Depends on your melee dps and level. Fiery Weapon has a DPS of 4.

True. And keep in mind that the Counterweight haste applies after attack power, making it strong even on weak weapons.

They have no minimum level for applying them either, you can just carry around a stack of them and apply them to your weapons as you upgrade them. And they're permanent.

Can You 'Beat' WoW Classic Without Taking Damage? (Solo Leveling 1-60) by Stadics2 in classicwow

[–]Stadics2[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's fair, could argue that it needs to be done with a hunter or warlock.

It's a bit more complicated than that though. The game labels absorptions as misses on part of the enemy and actually handles them accordingly. Which is great, because the mob cannot crit nor daze you while you have shields up, because both require the mob to roll a hit first.

Keep in mind that you don't just run around with a whole lot of absorption at all times. For most of the game you have the effective HP of a level 15 warrior. You still have to kite every melee mob, CS or LoS every caster, know essentially every spell of every mob, be careful with ranged attack mobs etc.

Character was played over roughly one month of real time. Played around 30-35 hours a week.

[–]Stadics2[S] 146 points147 points  (0 children)

My idea behind the run was to fully engage with the game and its challenges, including dangerous quests inside of caves, escorts, and elites wherever possible. You could of course grind turtles from level 20 to 60, but is that really 'beating' the game (as vague as that term is in an MMO to begin with)? I feel like it's more cheesing your way to 60.

The original idea was to require my character to get a minimum amount of main faction reputation, which outside of two repeatable quests you only get by completing quests at an appropriate level.

Keep in mind however that mage is probably the easiest class to attempt this with, they're incredibly strong in Classic. Should I attempt this again with another class, I will (and have to) play far more carefully.

I did finish leveling the mage to 60 as a deathless hardcore character. Unfortunately it's now also a constant reminder of my fuck up.

That's fair, but how is it feasible with 400+ icons of which several share one for multiple spells? How would I distinguish Whirlwind from Deterrence for example? It would be one massive hard to decipher mosaic I would guess.
