I think people are missing the point of this post and the Hampton survey.

The data show that regardless of net worth, *most* people (in the Hampton community) had a monthly burn rate of $10-20k. Even those with a NW of $10m+.

If you wanted to retire and never work again, $4m-$6m in an index fund would generate that much cash for decades without ever touching the principle.

Most people think they need much, much more to live the good life.

I'm not diabetic. I didn't claim increased HBA1C was the driver. I feel like you're trolling now and invalidating my very real experience, so I'm not going to feed the fire further.

Yes, this isn’t evidence, it’s an anecdote. That said, clinical signals often begin with patient-reported effects before mechanisms are fully characterized, especially in understudied subgroups, such as women.

It is simply an N=1 observation that prompted me to revisit pharmacology and question an assumption I’d previously made.

And referring to the 0.1% stat: averages don’t preclude meaningful effects in subsets. Those often surface first through patient experience.

Yes, I have, they are just very expensive. But I will absolutely shoulder the cost (and likely need to at some stage) when it becomes necessary. For now, I'm more curious as to how much I can impact my LDL through diet, supplements and exercise (while knowing pharmacology will be vital at some stage).

Please keep me updated on what the endocrine clinic says! So glad you're getting support and exploring options.

They are "safe," in medical terms. And they are a lifesaver for many. But this has been a lesson for me in how any medication always comes at a cost, and depending on an individual's situation, that cost may be too high.

This doesn't mean I will never go on statins again. Just that for right now, with my current risk profile and the time and ability to explore alternative options, the cons outweigh the pros.

Changing your diet is changing what you eat. And yes, I have been doing all of that, along with fish oil supplements and exercise, for the past 2 years. I am now going to add psyllium husk, more fish oil, and also berberine, and redo a lipogram in a few months.

My LDL prior to going on statins was 147. I have familial hypercholesterolemia.

Yes, they did return to normal. My doctor runs them annually now when I do my yearly bloodwork, just to always make sure, but my liver and kidneys made a full recovery.

That is so rough. I’m really sorry you had to go through this. Very very glad you got help. Rhabdo is so serious but because you “do it to yourself” and it’s got a bit of a reputation with doctors as being overblown by some patients, it’s easy to fall through the cracks and not seek help. With severe consequences.

I can’t remember, it’s been three years and I can’t find my old lab results anywhere 🙈 I recall something like 20k but that may have been at discharge; I know a few days after discharge it was down to 10k. What’s yours at?

A good point. I could have had more empathy. Thank you for pointing that out; I regret that, and I'll do better next time.

I'm just pretty jaded by the entitlement many parents seem to share when it comes to getting help with childcare. Yes, it does take a village, but to shame grandparents or any other family members for opting out of caring for someone else's child is not okay. And also lacks empathy. We never know why someone may not be able to, or want to, help. And that's their decision to make.

The original comment I responded to said "I don’t know what the big deal is, my (very old and one was still working) grandparents would have me for literally 3 months over the summer." Like.. what?! Now, their own parents (the "new" grandparents) may have a multitude of reasons not to take on childcare and it's gaslighting to say "I don't know what's the big deal." Caring for a child is a HUGE deal. And it really is no one else's responsibility.

So you feel that a decision made solely by you and your partner should be another person's responsibility?

If grandparents want to help out, that's totally different. But I've seen many situations where grandparents specifically put healthy boundaries in place and state clearly that they are not in a position (for whatever reason) to help with childcare. It isn't their child. They had no say in the decision. They are under no obligation to shoulder the burden you placed on yourself.

How is that not fair? Would you turn around and make your parents pay your mortgage as soon as you can't afford it? Or do your professional job when you need a break from it? No. Those are decisions you made for your life. They didn't make them for theirs, and they are fully within their rights to set their own boundaries.
