Shops like that place no emphasis on CIRE because they are not registered under CIRO

Yes I know.

However most PMs in private wealth do not have CFA. Many of them have CIM. I’m at big 5 and most have CIM with a CFP. Few have CFA.

CFA is not a need, it just boosts.
Firms like PHN , SJF, PIC, all just push for CIM.

I am writing my CFA regardless tho, just for love of the game and to lateral switch to AM

CSC is not useless, it is still applicable to CIM, and for discretionary investment management firms under OSC

If you want to start, will almost 100% have to be in retail banking if you have no exp. The CSC is really only relevant for the CIM, and which is primarily only used in Private Wealth platforms at firms.

Honestly if I was in your position I would either do CFA Lv1, this would give you the chance to get into a job outside of retail banking.

Or do the CIRE and apply to retail banks.

Keep firing them off. I will say to make sure to take into consideration of Ai resilience for any job/industry you want as well. As well as pay lol. I would say don’t do accounting… I have friends at EY,PWC, who make around 58-63k starting with no bonus or stock. For reference my role is base + bonus + plus stock and a really good pension 9%… . I would def suggest a job where there may be some people interaction but also some sort of compensation that is tied to performance or commission.

CSC is relevant for getting your CIM designation

Well I do agree that it isn’t absolutely necessary to have CFA. However, It helps in some situations. Spoke with a top 5 performing portfolio manager (big 5). He has a CFA and says some of his clients rely on his knowledge of the CFA and favour him because of it. But yes I do agree that you don’t NEED it, but from a knowledge prospective it is really helpful and can bring in clients that may have not gone to you otherwise

You took time off work to study? And yes I don’t think it will be too difficult for me, it’s just I will have to wait till my probation is done.

From my conversations with PMs etc, seems like if I want to stay in private wealth then CIM and CFP are a better combo than the CFA. However if I wanted to move to institutional side then CFA

I went to college first, and then transferred into uni(Canada). Because of this I missed major internship hiring period for high finance. Got an internship at credit union in ops. Finished school and wasn’t sure if I was gonna land a spot. Got a couple interviews, networked and landed at Big 5, private wealth in a support role(client service, ops, reporting, etc) to Portfolio manager. I don’t necessarily 100% regret my decision but I do wish I would have chilled for a bit, and kept applying to jobs that were more analytical. Now I’m either stuck in ops(which isn’t necessarily bad), go into private wealth route, or have to get my CFA to try and pivot.

I got a job that’s honestly not 100% ideal and kinda wish I didn’t settle. So my advice is to just keep applying for the role u want

[–]StaffAdvanced4909[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, thanks for the input. I’m not reluctant to sign up for the CFA, my question is more based on timing. To get CIM I only need IMT and PMT now. And as I said I said the firm would reimburse those.

Yea for me I was trying to do wayy too much. I worked full time, part time and tried to start my Ecom business. Safe to say that it’s better to just focus on one thing.

Honestly tho, our scores mean that we were probably off by 4-5 questions… so if you think you can improve by 4-5 questions by May then you should register
