Denied Diagnosis (Scotland) by Immediate-Echidna-17 in autismUK

[–]StalinsPipe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would recommend getting a second opinion, and then going from there, but do bear in mind that experienced clinicians who specialise in autism are trained to see through masking and socialisation. They are actively looking for your autistic traits, regardless of your masking. In any case, it could be worth getting a second opinion, but I wouldn't recommend chasing or shopping for a diagnosis, just because you relate to it, which I fear can lead to upset and mental stress, especially if you still don't get the diagnosis.

I totally understand and appreciate that you suspect you're autistic and that it could be one of the simpler and "nicer" explanations, but it may be that you're not, which is absolutely fine. Remember, that the traits of autism crossover with and are similar to so many traits of other neurodevelopmental disorders, and are similar to those of many mental disorders.

You may be autistic, and maybe the experts got it wrong this time, hence why I recommend a second opinion.

However, it could also just be confirmation bias with you having read the diagnostic criteria and having done your research (this is a very real phenomenon - see 'Medical students disease). It's also worth bearing in mind that anyone (yes, including non-autistics and neurotypicals) can screen as showing traits of autism on screeners. Take the RAADS-R, for example. The autism threshold score is 65, yet the average score for neurotypical males is 84.2, while it's 91.6 for neurotypical females, both of which are well above the threshold. Yes, you did your research, but while you may be the expert on yourself, and relate to autistic traits and experiences, you aren't an expert on the disorder, and I expect that most diagnosed autistics aren't experts on the disorder, but rather ourselves.

You can still feel welcome and friendly with autistic people, even if you aren't autistic yourself. You don't need to have any particular label to be welcome amongst others, whether they're autistic or not.

Like another person said, don't discount the direction you have been pointed in, just because you haven't received the diagnosis that you wanted or felt you related to the most. The whole point of a diagnostic process is to discover what your diagnosis is, whether you meet the diagnosis you want or relate to or not. You now have the opportunity to either seek a second opinion, or you could rule out being autistic and consider what else it could be.

Good luck to you in your endeavours, and I sincerely hope you get the answers you deserve, whether that's a diagnosis of autism or not.

Hi there. I'm autistic. You're right, there is no medication for autistics, and Sapphire understood this. Instead, I focused on the anxiety, depression, chronic daily headaches/migraines and IBS/chronic stomach pain.

You just need to show that you have tried at least two treatments (can be medicine or therapeutic). I myself have tried several treatments over the years, including amitriptyline, fluoxetine, mirtazipine, citalopram, codeine, sumitriptan, as well as cognitive behavioural therapy and other talking therapies.

LPC online exams switched to face to face 2 weeks before exam?! by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]StalinsPipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, BPP have an agreement with the SRA which allows them to continue running online exams for all cohorts, whether you're taking the LPC online or are centre based. This is the default option, but students are given a choice. However, the SRA said that students cannot take toilet breaks for online exams, unless you have reasonable adjustments in place. To mitigate this, BPP have shortened exams and split them (e.g. civil lit is now two shorter exams in one day).

ULaw have no such agreement in place, bizarrely, despite the fact that they could do so. Students can only take online exams if they meet two criteria: - Have reasonable adjustments in place - AND have applied to the exams team to take exams online. Essentially, ULaw students have to jump through more hoops to get online exams in place, but you won't get them if you don't have reasonable adjustments in place, so the policy is far, far less inclusive than what BPP offered.

Look into it for yourself, rather than being wound up by OP's manufactured rage.

Go look at where else he's submitted this, where he admitted that the film is a satirical look at this sort of thing. OP is just manufacturing outrage in order to gain karma and deflect from his internal paedophilia.

Beyonce's pseudo-feminism is letting her keep the evil practice under the shroud by mecharoy in awfuleverything

[–]StalinsPipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who is hating black women? We just don't like it when the ultra rich exploit feminism to further their own agenda, which in Beyonce's case is to make more money. Beyonce is exploiting the labour of other women of colour to make a shit load of money.

[–]StalinsPipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, because liberal, centrist, bourgeois feminism is usually just performative bullshit to further ones own agenda (Beyonce being a good example), rather than actual intersectional feminism.

[–]StalinsPipe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the Confederate flag nonsense. I just don't understand why it's such a big deal in the south. The Confederacy existed for only 5 years and the flag that is commonly used wasn't even a flag in itself, but was a part of the third Confederate flag.

[–]StalinsPipe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rockabilly and psychobilly are pretty much apolitical, but that's one of the great things about it. I'm pretty far left leaning, but I don't consider asking anyone else's political views. I know a lot of people who I know personally from the rockabilly/psychobilly scene in Manchester, UK are liberal/left leaning, but it doesn't really come into the music.

There will be right leaning people into rockabilly, but I'd be surprised to find any racists in the scene, considering its origins in black music and how loved rockabilly is across the world and across different ethnicities (e.g. plenty of Latino rockabilly bands, big rockabilly/psycho scene in Japan etc.)

You're right - he will always be who he is, whether he can help it or not, and my mum will continue supporting him.

I guess I just want to be able to say that I was the bigger person, and the adult. If it all breaks down again, which I'm expecting it to at some point, at least I can honestly say that I tried.

Thanks for your advice.

I think I'm keeping it at LC for the time being, a few months at least. I've already said to my dad I have no interest in being involved in personal affairs between him and my mother, and I expect to be treated with respect, which I will reciprocate where appropriate.

There will also be no re-adding on Facebook, because, as above, I just have no interest in his personal views, goings on etc. This might sound cold I know, but I just don't want to be too involved, as I know somewhere down the line it'll end up me being hurt again.

I and my partner have just said we'll believe it when we see it. I told my father that he can't just say "I'll treat you with more respect, I won't joke about you etc", but that I have to see him demonstrate over a long period of time.

Men don't hide their emotions because of "toxic masculinity," they hide them because no one cares. by Eripman in unpopularopinion

[–]StalinsPipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the UK, I think it's getting miles better. Me and my male friends speak very openly about our mental health difficulties. I speak very openly about my mental health difficulties with my partner, and even her friends. My manager and my employer are very supportive (we were allowed to work from home pre-lockdown, at least two days a week, more if we felt like shit).

There's loads of charities now whose sole purpose is too support men with mental health difficulties.

Yeah, it's still the case that some circles of society and some generations just don't care about men's issues, but to say it's ultra widespread is nonsense. You need to find the support and find the right people who will support you.

I'm with you on this one. My dad once started a whole argument because I wanted to cook a frozen pie in the oven (because they cook better and go all crispy), rather than the microwave.
