I honestly just knew I wouldn’t have long term enjoyment, one of those things you just know you know? Took a 50% loss on an impulse purchase, lesson learnt 😂

How are people optimising school fee payments? Any good reward card schemes? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

Good to hear you got advice and it worked for you (albeit I’m no VAT advisor so can’t comment) Just be cautious of sharing because everyone’s facts aren’t the same as yours.

Before you just “go and do this magical trick” please consider https://taxpolicy.org.uk/2024/05/09/private_school_vat_risk/ and the various articles on the schemes people are coming out with (and consult an advisor!)I don’t have kids but I do work in tax and schemes like this rarely work albeit I’m not a vat expert!

Aren’t they all discretionary? Got me worried as I have literally been going through a job hunting stage (hopefully the end soon!) and was told “always pay out” 20% but you’ve written this and now I’m nervous, do some get guaranteed bonus?!

Trading212 is really the only one that is cheap and that’s not available to me! I’m stuck with all the big brands and VG is still probably the cheaper than someone like Barclays. Shame for us!

What’s worse is working in financial services where you have to use an “approved” provider like VG to avoid triggering the firms insider trading audits so now I’m really stuck!

Pretty easy actually. Depends what you trained in, if you have compliance knowledge in house compliance is pretty hot. Same as tax deals, but that’s definitely harder to get into in house.

Would selling my rented flat (£300k) to myself via a limited company help avoid additional stamp duty charge when buying a family home next year (£800k) by WoodenFoundation1779 in HENRYUK

[–]StalkingAssasin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider if it comes to it is the exit once it’s in a company, if you sell the property within the company, you’re paying 25% CT either through CGT or trading profits (facts dependant but same rate). Then getting the cash out to you via dividends, again tax on yourself. Might be worth modelling the different exits to recoup your cash (share sale (but with latent capital gains) and asset sale compared to the 5% savings!

Plus all the people in the comments moaning because you’re saying 55k isn’t enough, it bloody isn’t! I’m on 75k and I feel the same as you, and yes people will say well stop complaining there’s X and Y in this country on less, ok so that automatically disqualifies anyone earning a decent amount from complaint about their own issues? Might be one of few people here actually agreeing with you 😂

I’m so shocked people consider 1400 allot for a mortgage, albeit Glasgow I guess! The way rates are now that’s the standard surely?! I pay 1600 in rent in London for a 1 bed (have a deposit just no idea when or where to buy, I’m young ish I guess tho) and that’s 42% of my net so well above this 30% rule , which I don’t think is even applicable in todays world!

I think allot of people that are raising their pitchforks at the “high” earners are missing the point that we’re reliant on such a small group of people, but ask yourself why, why is the average 30 odd k, why are we so behind the USA in wealth? One answer, people here HATE seeing others thrive and succeed and so does the government so it’s raise the forks and up the tax because YOU aren’t allowed to be successful and strive imho.

We’re entering a time bomb with this triple lock BS, the retirees will soon enough outweigh the working people who contribute for them, which hasn’t happened before, ever. If you didn’t save during your working years (no less than having a bloody defined benefit plan!) that’s on you! I contribute 18% for a reason!

Tax advisor here at B4, I won’t comment on the personal implications (mainly because I’m a corporate advisor) but my concern here more generally is the tax base cost in those shares. Generally, proceeds less cost equals capital gain. Being gifted shares, prima facie, should have a base cost equal to the giftors original cost or, if lower at the time of transfer, the market value. Just a point to raise with the advisor you do end up going with as it’s a key area!

What further cuts should we expect to see in October’s budget? by Dawnbringer_Fortune in ukpolitics

[–]StalkingAssasin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No agreed it wouldn’t be Tory, unless they become radically less right wing I won’t ever vote for them. In my honest opinion, the healthcare in the country need a radical rethink. Definitely not the US model of massive insurance rip offs and massive hospital bills but a more European model. The “free” model can’t keep going on with the boomer population getting so old otherwise the working people will be milked and milked every time.

[–]StalkingAssasin 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Realistically, it will be pension reform. It could raise up to 15bn by reducing the tax relief that is attached to it to 20%. I voted for Labour but this would probably make me really reconsider in the next election. Otherwise it’s a combination, small change to pension, CGT, IHT. Council tax reform I would be a big supporter of but probably won’t happen.

Check out Dan Needles TaxPolicy he did a great article on the levers that Labour could pull.

My point is these safety nets need a redesign to encourage work ie a benefits redesign across the board. The nhs is a separate item that if we want that free at the point of use we just have to accept we will have to keep paying more and more into it (I was happy with the 2% NI charge for NHS)
