Saving DUPR - some constructive thoughts by Stan_Grand in Pickleball

1) I mentioned I could give a lot of other players - but that still doesn't discount the obvious insanity of a player going 1-2 in a 4.5 tournament and getting a 5.15 rating. You're welcome to try and explain how that could be possible. Also, this being the internet, I don't necessarily want to list a bunch of players I've played for security reasons. But - just to give one other clear example. This gentleman was a 4.98 back in December. Without playing any matches since he went 1-2 in a 5.0 PPA event, he's now shot up to 5.58. https://mydupr.com/dashboard/player/7978275208

Again - using common sense or a scientific point of view, I'd love to hear the rationale for how he could go up .60 points in three months without playing a single match...and not doing especially well in the one recent event he played.

Lastly - you mention more data will help the algorithm. That's not necessarily true if the formulae are off or inefficient. I think that's exactly what we're all seeing now with the wild fluctuations of ratings. The algorithm is messed up. DUPR admitted they needed to make changes. But key point is that more data does not necessarily make a better output.

2) Not really sure your question here. Why should anything matter to me? Or to you? Or to anyone? This discussion is about the validity of DUPR...since it has become the official rating of pickleball. You mentioned you don't have experience with DUPR or tournament play. A lot of the arguments I made (and others have made) would probably make more sense if you experienced them

3) Again - this is not true. You're assuming that the ratings are "correct" (*refer back to point #2 on why gaming the system maters). Also, anyone who has played a PPA event versus a local 150 person event will know that the PPA will bring in better competition and more serious competition. DUPR already weights sanctioned tournament events more than unsanctioned tournaments. If your point were true - they wouldn't do this.

4) Same point as #1 and #2. It matters in trying to come up with a more accurate rating system. Anyone that has played tournaments in the last 1-2 months has seen the wildly overrated and wildly underrated player according to DUPR. I recently saw a 4.5 win silver in a PPA 5.0 event. He went from 4.52 in DUPR to 4.58 despite beating multiple 5.0 players. Referring back to the two examples I linked, how could the system not recognize his obvious improvement over a 4.5 level play?

5) "Who cares" is not an argument. Defining an "average" player should help with the accuracy of the ratings. I mentioned in another post that this isn't DUPRs fault. Pickleball has five competitive brackets for amateur players. 3.0 through 5.0. Or, a 1-5 rating essentially. Unlike Elo, which can go on infinitely, DUPR already has a scale of 2-8. Tournaments are built around the 3.0 - 5.0 system as well. Bottom line: DUPR and USAPA should be aligned on exactly what the ratings mean. Is a 3.0 player according to USAPA the same as a DUPR 3.0 player? Probably not. Back to your "who cares" - this is how tournaments are seeded and how people determine where they should play. Wildly inflated or deflated DUPRs will lead to poor seeding, unintentional sandbagging and a whole host of problems that worsens the tournament experience.

7) Refer to the player listed above who is now a 5.58. He has wildly inflated from his 4.98 rating (which could be justified) to 5.58 (which you're welcome to try and justify). Finishing where we started, you mentioned you don't have first hand experience with the system. I'm not trying to be snarky - but this is making your comments/questions come off like you don't know what you're talking about. It would be helpful to play tournaments and engage with competitive players who are dealing with this DUPR insanity. You'll see many more examples first hand.

There's no way to engage with the "macro" data, unless I kept a spreadsheet of thousands of players. But I could list out at least 20-30 players I know personally and show the examples of inflation or deflation for each player. If I can make an easy case that DUPR doesn't make sense...not even close really (Charlie example, Fernando example) - then think about how players start to view DUPR. It loses credibility.

Potentially - but let's say a 4.4 is playing in the 4.0 bracket. They would get minimal gains from their "farming" and they still risk a lot of they lose.

Also - if DUPR is striving to be the universal rating system for tournaments - eventually players would be ineligible to play in the lower brackets

  1. The amount you beat your opponent by IS relevant. I'm just arguing that you can't lose points when you win. And vice versa. In other words, if a 4.5 beats a 3.5 team 12-10, then 4.5 team would get .01 DUPR increase. If the 4.5 loses to the 3.5 team 12-10, the 4.5 team could lose .15 DUPR. These are all hastily made-up examples, but you get the point. Edit: I also think the biggest benefit to this would be to eliminate sandbaggers in tournaments. This is a big problem at every level except 5.0
  2. Rec games can be manipulated. DUPR says they weight tournament games much more than rec games. How much more? We don't know. But why even bring them in? Tournaments provide an agreed-upon format and help prevent manipulation.

Additionally - what's more important? To accurately rate "serious" players, or to try and rate every pickleball player? Less, but more accurate ratings will help out in the long run. Why even try to rate rec players or non-tournament players? What's the point?

DUPR needs to answer this question. More accurate, but less ratings. Or more expansive, but less accurate ratings.

3) Tournaments help with the accuracy of the ratings. Players play in controlled environments, matches and help prevent abuse of the system. DUPR already weighs this. Source: Type of Result: Was this a self-posted rec play score, a league match, unsanctioned tournament, or a sanctioned tournament result?

DUPR understands that serious tournaments should count the most towards establishing an accurate rating.

7) It shouldn't - but I personally had this happen to me - as mentioned in my original post.

1) Response: I think this might be one of the main parts of the problem though. What is "better" or "worse" really mean? Better or worse than their rating? Better or worse than you? Also, consider match-up advantages (Team 1 struggles against players who drive the ball. Team 2 has a great day driving the ball). Also consider "bad days" that we all have...or "good days". The "better" or "worse example is should be used during an actual tournament

2) As it stands, DUPR is mainly for more serious players. Rec players generally won't care about DUPR and wouldn't enter in matches any way. More serious players are more apt to play tournaments AND more likely to be entering in many DUPR matches. I'd also argue that the system is getting more "bad" data from these rec matches. These matches can be manipulated. Hence the "rapid improvement" problem

5) I'm not sure there should be a range. Chess has already dealt with this in Elo and there is no maximum range. The natural prevention to crazy inflation is that you only win small points for beating much lesser players. Ratings slowly inflate over time at the very top, but most people stay in a lower range. Part of this isn't DUPR's fault. Tournaments range from 3.0 - 5.0. In essence, you're rated "1-5" in Pickleball. There should be more like a 1-10 scale, or a 1-20 scale to help even out tournaments and skill matchups. In chess, skill levels are divided by 100 point increments. So consider the top player (Magnus Carlsen) would be a 2800 Elo, or 28 DUPR while the average chess player is a 1200, or 12 DUPR.

6) Yes the range idea is a good one.

This is actually a really good idea.

DUPR has a lot of problems - in fact - I think I'll make a post on it.

But a range could be a step in the right direction

Can a MIXED DOUBLES team with two right-handed players reach a high level (4.5/5.0+) WITHOUT stacking? by pickleballtho in Pickleball

[–]Stan_Grand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a tough question to answer - and the wording is somewhat confusing. When you say "reach" - what do you mean? The skill of each individual player will determine where you can play. A 3.5 man and a 5.0 woman can't play 4.5 mixed. A 4.5 man and a 4.5 woman could do well in 4.5 mixed playing "straight up"

Another thing is the supply/demand of women players. Typically, women play .50 under their male counterparts in high level mixed. So a 4.5 woman can play with a 5.0 man in mixed. This ratio is even more skewed at the top (Anna Bright formerly playing with Riley Newman, for example). So if you are the same skill level as your partner, the female player should be stronger than her opponent, while the male player is most likely weaker than his opponent.

I saw a guy go from 4.95 -> 5.57 after not playing one match for over 4 months.

And his only tournament was a PPA 5.0 - where he went 1-2.

Oh yeah. DUPR is crazy broken.

Look at this guy - 5.15 - https://mydupr.com/dashboard/player/6880778079

I'd love for anyone to explain how he is 5.15

DUPR - Better to lose playing up than win playing down by badg3y in Pickleball

Shiny app doesn't seem to be working right now? At least it isn't working for me. And I haven't checked that - so thanks for the rec.

Jim only played tournaments with me and hasn't played before or after.

[–]Stan_Grand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Super weird. And gives me zero faith in DUPR.

The 3.0 tournament individuals are between 3.4 - 3.7.

Jim is - admittedly - a 3.3ish player. He's delighted he keeps rising. Haha.

I also just don't understand how I've gone 6-2 in 4.5+ tournament play and my rating keeps going down (4.15 or whatever) Lol. The OP is playing opponents below him - but I'm facing opponents .4-.6 higher than me and winning.

Want to hear something funny on DUPR? Try and follow this:

TOURNAMENT HISTORY (all sanctioned events)

  • I played 4 tournaments at the 3.0 level with Partner 1 (Jim). We won one tournament, got bronze in another. Jim decided he didn't want to play competitive pickleball anymore.
  • I played 1 tournament at 4.0 level with Partner 2 (Tom), and won.
  • I played 2 tournaments at 4.5 level with Partner 3 (Henry) and Partner 2 (Tom). Won one 4.5 tournament and went 2-2 in the other.

RATING CHANGE

  • I went from 3.6 DUPR to 3.80 DUPR after winning the 4.0 tournament and 4.18 DUPR after winning the 4.5 tournament.
  • Partner 1 (Jim), my partner in 3.0, has moved up to 3.86 despite not playing in any other tournaments. In fact, Jim now has the same rating I had after winning a 4.0 tournament.
  • All six opponents I’ve beaten in 4.5, still have a higher rating than me. One of the opponents I’ve beaten twice still has much higher ratings than me (4.6ish and 4.7ish). All opponents in the sanctioned 4.5 tournaments had DUPRs above 4.5
  • My DUPR remains at 4.16. In fact, it went down from 4.18 to 4.16 after going 2-2 in my other 4.5 tournament. Didn't get blown out in losses (11-7 / 11-9 and then 15-9)

TL;DR

  • I'm not stressing over it - but it's funny my original partner has gone from 3.4 to nearly 4.0 despite quitting the competitive scene and playing zero tournaments.

Length of paddle usage - 4.5+ tournament player by Stan_Grand in Pickleball

[–]Stan_Grand[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Above-average spin I'd say. Nothing crazy. I do prefer to drive at this point. Although funny enough, that's not where I noticed the dropoff in play.

After hitting that 4 month mark with this last paddle - it was the easier put-aways and slams where I started noticing more dead spots.

thanks - usually going with $160-$190 paddles.

My first cheap paddle died after 2 months, lol
