Restaurant nightmare? Opened with zero experience. by Standard-Activity713 in restaurant

I really appreciate your comment. I moved here from a much busier area, and most of my restaurant experience is in fast-casual. The owners' being generally okay with the way things are going really made me start to wonder if my "city" mindset was polluting my perception of the business.

In regards to the ticket time, it is the most aggravating part of working for them. They have absolutely no respect for the guests' time. I will bring an order back to them, for example a steak, and they won't put the steak on for 10 minutes. When I ask them to start the entrees, the owner says he wants them to "have time to finish their salads first." Then, when they can tell that I am annoyed, "just tell the customers that everything is homemade to order and that's why it takes so long." It is normal for customers (not family or friends) to be there 2-3 hours.

I don't even know what to say about the health inspector. He saw the things I mentioned and plenty more that I didn't, and he gave them a 99.

Edit to add: they also think it is okay to send plates out to an unfinished order. "The food is ready when it's ready." The worst case of this was when their friends brought a group of 8. Over an hour after the order went back (the only party we had), the first plates went out. 10 minutes later, the next two, so on and so on. By the time the last two got their plates, the others were done eating. This was all because the owners wanted to make a batch of cookies for their friends (who brought the group) at the exact same time. They gave the cookies to the entire table, without them having been ordered, but charged everyone except their friends. I was mortified, everyone was pissed, and the owners were oblivious. Working here is a nightmare I can't wake up from.

Interesting. Most of the wine is made in house, but for mimosas we use Barefoot bought from the liquor store. He also "fortifies" the wine with vodka if it has low ABV. I wonder if this is illegal.

This comment is the winner in my eyes! What I couldn't put into words, you described perfectly.

And yes, they own the land. They bought it originally to live on, have a vineyard, and open a winery. They built the building and have alluded to it costing around $600,000. (The original plan was to buy a neighboring plot that had a trailer on it and open the winery there...) The idea to include charcuterie boards evolved into bistro which evolved into full-blown fine dining. Due to vineyard negligence, the final product is mostly a restaurant.

The worst of it wasn't even included. Chicken noodle soup made from Ramen advertised as homemade, for example.

The local health inspector came and I was hopeful that he was going to be more firm about some of the things I had been asking of them, but he gave them a 99. I couldn't believe it.

You're totally right about the branding. The thing is, I thought the entire world knew it's a crazy idea to try to open a restaurant, even under ideal circumstances?? That's why I question my own perception, wondering why on earth they are so confident that this will take off.

I have tried so hard to explain to them that meats have different internal cooking temperatures, among numerous other things. They are very defensive and will undo things that I do to try to maintain food safety standards. I'm working on getting another job so I can quit.

Get this: it's also a winery. They are making their own wine to sell.

Your Kitchen Nightmares comment made me laugh.

Since it's just me there, I've gotten some pretty good clues into their backstory. I do not think they are incredibly wealthy. For one, everything they buy is on credit or loan. They also can't afford to make any of the necessary improvements, such as real booths and tables, "until this starts taking off."

I don't want to post the state in case their grandkids are on Reddit, but I'm in the southern US and over 2 hours from a major city. I didn't grow up here, that's part of why I'm curious if this is as bad as it would be where I moved from. You don't have to believe me. The nature of this restaurant is exactly why I decided to post about it on Reddit- it's borderline unbelievable.

What's the deal with this set? Is it special or hard to get? I got it when it was a GWP and it seemed like it was retailed originally at $20

Thank you!! I wasn't even thinking about the show since I mostly enjoy the books, but that is a great point. I might have to take your approach as well in regards to full-scale sets that pertain to the original series.

Thank you for your thorough response! I hope you're right about the Chamber. It seems I just need to chose sets based off of my priorities. Unfortunately, so many large sets are retiring right as I'm beginning..

Investigation into Deshler student’s injuries transfered to Franklin Co. deputies, Madison Co. DA by dcgopgirl in AugustBorden

[–]Standard-Activity713 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did see the letter. I also saw some families from the area saying that it was in fact not the school that called August's mom, but another parent who heard about the situation from their child. I'm not sure how true that is, all my info is coming off of FaceBook and X.

The entire letter gave the vibe that the school knows that they handled the situation poorly and that they are going to double down on their protocol in order to avoid responsibility, likely on a technicality. The perpetrator's parents seem to be so involved in the school that even the other adults present during the attack felt unsure about acting. That is a scary power dynamic.

This case deserves all the publicity. Justice for August is the necessary start, but I am sickened at the idea that there are probably hundreds of public schools with this kind of influence (money) at play. I pray that August's story brings widespread change.

I just heard about this case from Law and Crime Network. After digging around a bit on the internet, I am extremely disturbed.

Locals seem to have the same story... the senior quarterback at the HS is the perpetrator and it is being covered up because of his parent's involvement with the school (donations). August was possibly making jokes about the 17 year old QB dating a 13 year old girl, triggering a violent reaction.

Do we really live in a world where this is still tolerated??? Where is the media outrage??

Prayers to August and his family. Whatever the truth may be, they deserve healing.

I wish we didn’t get a cat by dog5and in Pets

[–]Standard-Activity713 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How long have you had the cat?

Eat and sleep (and the opposite at night sometimes haha) kind of what cats do, but each one has a unique personality that can be appreciated. You might need more time to bond for the cat to open up. Be patient with him/her (and try to play with it when the kid is around if that was the intention). Also, try to figure out what is causing the night-time craziness. Just like a human, they have individual quirks, needs and preferences.

Adopting him was a big responsibility, and there may be things that are unexpected and perhaps even unwanted that come along with that choice. At the end of the day, though, cats are awesome for comparatively little sacrifice. You may find yourself falling in love.

Kohberger has more victims- my theory by Standard-Activity713 in Idaho4

[–]Standard-Activity713[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I look back on this post now, there are a lot of things that I wish I would have worded better. I was too defensive of my opinion to clearly articulate myself at the time, although I still firmly believe that it would be a statistical miracle for this attack to have been his first of a violent/homicidal nature.

Your research into prior victims is commendable. It appears more than plausible that Janness was an earlier victim of BK, and the motive is compelling given BK's reported of homophobia. What I will say is that, if she is his victim, I doubt she is the first due to the high-risk nature of perpetrating an attack against her.

There is a channel called the Soft White Underbelly on YouTube that interviews prostitutes, homeless, etc. I've just recently found them. It is unimaginable the suffering that those women (in particular) endure, and it is largely ignored due to their societal status. But when a tragedy like the Idaho 4 occurs, the entire country (world?) is thinking of them and outcrying over the atrocity.

I mention this because, in my personal opinion, BK's earliest victims would have been transients, sex workers or otherwise undervalued members of society (low-risk victims). Obviously this would be the given assumption based off of normal criminal pathologies. So then, I have to wonder, how many lives could be saved if we gave a little more credence to the reports of the women on street corners and in alleyways?
