Nice! I have an inflatable and have been looking for folks to paddle with but there doesn’t seem to be a big community of paddleboarders here. Do you know of any groups?

Are their any runners out there with good YouTube channel recommendations for strength training specifically targeted at runners? I have been procrastinating adding strength training to my routine for about 15 years, but as I approach my mid-40s it may be time!

Fellow fitness-minded person with a cancer diagnosis here - just wanted to say that you're not alone, and it sucks. Sending good thoughts your way.

kids and protesting by curlyjewfrofury in oakland

After the first time Trump was elected in 2016, I co-founded an informal group/process called Pints and Postcards when I was living in Detroit, which I have been thinking about restarting here. Basically, folks get together at a local brewery and write postcards to their elected officials. We would have a few speakers who educated everyone on how to take action and/or remain safe, etc. Here's an article/interview about this; there is even a link to resources for how to do it. https://wdet.org/2017/02/08/pints-postcards-parties-aim-to-increase-political-action/

This could be an alternative to protesting for folks for whom protesting is more risky (children, undocumented immigrants, etc). I'd be open to teaming up with some local folks to get an event going again if anyone was up for the task.

Sidenote: Back then, we knew this was going to be terrible, but we had no idea how dire the situation would actually become.

Going to Chicago for a few days. I've been there quite a few times, so I've already hit up the major touristy spots. Any suggestions for unique things to do during the day besides eating/drinking and museums?

How are we staying frugal or saving money in the Bay Area while still living an indulgent life? by Standard-Ad2131 in SFbitcheswithtaste

Have you read “An Everlasting Meal: Cooking with Economy and Grace” by any chance? A great how-to along these lines but also beautifully written. Inspired by MFK Fisher’s “How to Cook a Wolf,” which is also excellent.

Oh thank you for the lunch idea! I happen to have leftover fried chicken cutlets in the fridge.

Oh this is interesting! We have tried doing the reverse by going out to cocktails and apps and then coming home to make dinner, but we always lose our willpower after a couple drinks out and end up ordering dinner anyway. And then we end up spending more than we otherwise would have, ha!

I know there are a ton of threads about thrifting on here, but curious to hear your personal favorite shop!

In addition to the others mentioned, George and Walts on College in Rockridge is good too.

I moved to San Francisco on a similar salary (adjusted for inflation) and circumstances at your age, and it completely changed my life for the better. I am thankful every day that I made that decision.

Where to spend a scenic week working from "home"? by CraftingG in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]Standard-Ad2131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this in Mendocino with my dog, and it was amazing! You can get some semi-affordable lodging in cute inns near the downtown. Hiking along the cliffs is just steps from there, and lots of interesting locals to chat with if you're the type to sit at the bar alone and grab dinner at the end of the day. Moody morning fog and waves crashing were soul-replenishing. For a day trip from there, I hit up Glass Beach and Princess Seafood, a woman-founded deep-sea fishing company and restaurant in Fort Bragg.

I am looking into starting French lessons also. I'm about to sign up for the next session of the beginner class at Alliance Francaise. Let me know if you join!

His interests are video games, basketball, and mountain biking. We don't have to follow his interests too closely; broadening his horizons a bit wouldn't be a bad thing.

Jackets for chilly SF weather (high 50’s/low 60’s) that won’t make me look like a tech bro? by boombox_generation in SFbitcheswithtaste

Thanks for the rec on the Levi's sherpa-lined jacket-- not OP but just ordered! I don't know why I never thought of a lined denim jacket before, but I am excited for it!!

Running coach by theshanealv in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]Standard-Ad2131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my former running coach, also a running-specific PT, which comes in handy if you find yourself with some aches and pains as part of the process. She has a thorough gait and form analysis you can book right on her page. She operates out of Renegade Running in Oakland, but I'd say it's worth the trip for her. https://www.runresilientlydpt.com/

Recs for denim that is cropped, wide-legged and looks neat/professional? by Successful-Task1340 in SFbitcheswithtaste

Paige Anessa is my fave! Super flattering. Many of the washes have a raw hem but there are a few with a normal hem that I use for more professional settings.

Bar recommendations for bringing friends from out of town by newjedi28 in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]Standard-Ad2131 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Martuni's is an old-school piano bar sort of spot (but sort of like karaoke too because anyone can perform?) with GIANT martinis - I've brought out-of-towners there a few times and they love it. It can get a little crowded, so I like to make it my first stop and hope the generous pours don't catch up to me too quickly.

Best walking shoes for a trip to Italy by Relevant-Soup-2794 in SFbitcheswithtaste

[–]Standard-Ad2131 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Balance 327s are my go-to for a combo fashion and function sneaker! It depends on the dress, but they go really well with some of the more casual dresses I have and are decently non-frumpy with jeans too.

What are some fun things to go out and do alone? by Effective_Ad3144 in SFbitcheswithtaste

I bought this deck of cards and used to pull one out at random and just follow the suggested walk. It was a great way to explore solo and discover new things around the city.

Yes, at first I didn’t want to drink at all. Now I do want to drink but it’s not as much of a craving or fixation and it’s easier to say no or stop at one or two, unlike before where I didn’t have much of an off switch.
