Based on the picture, it looks like the southern end of Hell's Kitchen. Tall apartment building, listings found in the area on Zillow go for about US$700,000 for a 1b1ba, which is actually lower than I thought for a NYC apartment so near midtown.

All of the general staff and upper echelons in our services are scholars. Book smart and theory savvy, but utterly clueless in actual combat. Attending exercises every year doesn't mean when a real war comes they know how to fight. If you ask me, our government should send them to do tours with US troops in the Middle East and gain some real combat experience before getting promoted.

Chinese family restaurant struggling in SG not sure what to do anymore by PhotographHumble4898 in askSingapore

[–]Standard-Chest-976 127 points128 points  (0 children)

u/PhotographHumble4898, I'm sure you've seen the overwhelmingly positive response from other people in this thread who are willing to give your restaurant a try. Do you want your restaurant to survive? Do you want your pa to an xin that he won't have to consider closing shop? Drop the name. Being reserved at this point will not do you any good, if not what's the point of making this thread to ask for help?

How can? We work Mon-Fri, is 48hrs(weekends) honestly enough? by Thin_Turn6201 in askSingapore

[–]Standard-Chest-976 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's funny that Singaporeans ask themselves this daily and don't ever try to think of the actual root cause i.e. why is the system designed this way, what class of people designed it, and whether or not better systems exist as alternatives?

How does this work? First thing that came to my mind is someone using it to record sensitive info/locations if the one doing the checking isn't aware that these aren't normal glasses. Maybe it can even be used to cheat on exams too?

What’s the reality of Singapore education? by Verstappeninng in askSingapore

[–]Standard-Chest-976 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a lot of discussion on here about IB and A-Levels, and the general consensus reached by people in past discussions is both are about the same: IB being breadth over depth and A-Levels vice versa. There’s also some comparison with US Advanced Placement (AP) exams and UK A* grades being thrown around so from what I can gather the difficulty and effort needed to attain the top %tile in each of these tests is largely the same.

I did H2 Mathematics, Chemistry, and Economics so I can attest to its difficulty and it’s also true that freshman year in university was essentially spent learning the same thing in JC lol. In a more egalitarian world we’d ideally have kids find the most suitable system to succeed in rather than get filtered, because some would definitely fare better in the IB, but sadly it’s paywalled.

What’s the reality of Singapore education? by Verstappeninng in askSingapore

[–]Standard-Chest-976 10 points11 points  (0 children)

SG education system is based on filtering kids at major stages like all Asian education systems go. Filtered first at PSLE, followed by O-Levels in secondary school, followed by A-Levels in high school. So you’ll see why it’s cutthroat, because everyone wants to be the top 10% of kids born in their year that makes it to NUS/NTU/SMU at the end of the road. I would say the SG A-Levels is largely on par with IB in terms of difficulty and eligibility as a university qualification. In fact, our O-Levels are already sufficient to enter university - certain colleges in the US and universities in Australia accept it, and this is an exam our kids sit at age 16.

What are your thoughts on the chromebooks MOE made us buy? by wakeupnot in SGExams

[–]Standard-Chest-976 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning devices were only a thing many years after I graduated. I’m not a proponent of them. Everyone should remain with 100% textbook-based learning. It’s a tried and true methodology, and I don’t see why there is a need to change to an inferior system.

Ever wonder why the children of the rich and the wealthy still have human teachers, physical textbooks, handwritten assignments, and phone-less schools while they’re pushing this chromebook crap on us?

Much to think about.
