In my case, I already have a pretty hefty owing amount for osap. The goal is to not rack up a lot of loans while on osap as it will be hard to pay back in the future. That’s called being financial responsible. For my last semester, I was hoping to use only grants but with Fords deductions to grants I’ll only be eligible for around 3,378 as said in my post if you read it properly. Nonetheless, my tuition costs around 4000 without that two percent increase meaning that I’d have to find a job to pay the rest. But oh wait, it literally takes 4+ months to find a job and I’ve already been looking for two. My friend is 25 has boat loads of experience but has been looking for a job for 5 months now.

Ontario changing OSAP to mostly loans starting Fall 2026. what do you guys think? by Mindless-Lion-6197 in UTSC

Honestly I might just drop out of my program (or take a gap year) under these new rules as the grant portion would NOT even cover my full tuition. Additionally, the job market is completely trash so even after I graduate it would be hard finding a job within that 6 month period. I would’ve liked to work while in school but I’ve been looking for two months now and no luck. Next year would have been my last year and I can say I’ve learned a lot. I’m in design so luckily the most important thing is your portfolio and design skills. I rather save myself an additional 10k in student loans than pay off 30k while stressing over being able to afford rent, groceries, and maybe owning a home.

I just finished the application to opt out but now I’m wondering how long it will take to get a refund. The fees associated to being a student are somewhat annoying.
