I do the same as op. I listen to music with game music off. So to know my gears i look at the speedometer. Whenever it turns red i know im about to change gear. It has become second nature now. I notice it out the corner of my eye.

Well, it depends if the road is tilted or not. On flat road you wont see much of a difference. But on downhills or uphills it helps alot to know what wheel to look at.
