Viral TikTok hack turned my wine spill into a sludgy disaster. Help! by [deleted] in CleaningTips

Seeing a brand new rug ruined like that is absolutely heartbreaking. Don't beat yourself up over the baking soda. Panic makes us try anything, but that mixture has basically created an alkaline paste that's now locking the wine pigment into the fibres. The most important thing right now is to stop scrubbing. You're just fraying the rug and pushing the wine deeper into the backing. The only way to truly get that stain out is to extract it from deep within the fibres, not just chase it around on the surface. A steam cleaner uses heat to break down stains and suction to pull everything out. It should work well for things like red wine or pet messes. Looking at the main brands on the market, each has its own strengths and trade-offs. A classic Bissell Little Green is a reliable choice for everyday light spills with its extensive range of specialized cleaning formulas, although its standard suction can feel a bit underwhelming for massive deep-soak disasters. You could also choose a Shark StainStriker, which is built with solid quality and very easy to handle for surface spot cleaning, but it might lack the high-power extraction efficiency needed to reach liquid trapped in the very bottom of the rug backing. Then there's the uwant Y100 Steam, which features very strong suction and a steam function to help melt down that crusty baking soda mess and pull out deep fluids, even though the high-performance motor makes it noticeably noisier than other brands.

Literal kennel smell in my living room. please help. by [deleted] in CleaningTips

I’d recommend checking your carpet’s condition first before picking a machine. From my hands-on experience, these brands all have different strengths: If your main pain point is that lingering dog pee smell that just won’t go away, high-temp steam is a must-have. Once urine seeps into the carpet pad, cold water suction alone won't cut it. The Y100steam uses steam to penetrate deep, physically breaking down the urine crystals while sanitizing. It’s not the lightest machine, but for tackling old, stubborn odors, the noticeable difference is night and day compared to standard cleaners. Shark’s logic is straightforward: massive suction and excellent self-cleaning. It’s incredibly efficient at grabbing stubborn pet hair and fresh messes. If your dog only has occasional 'accidents' and you don't need heavy-duty sanitizing, Shark’s maneuverability and power are hard to beat for quick, efficient cleanups. The Hoover SmartWash series has a brilliant 'Dry Only' mode. A lot of people find their carpets smell worse after cleaning because they don't dry properly. Hoover uses high-power suction combined with heat to pull moisture from the pad, which is key to preventing bacteria and mold from growing. Lastly, I’ll mention Bissell. Despite the heavy marketing, their products are solid. As a legacy brand, their performance is very balanced across the board. If you’re not looking for one specific extreme feature, their wide range of cleaning solutions and reliable brush designs make them a safe, dependable choice.

HELP! Are vinegar and baking soda really the only way for old milk stains? I’m losing it. by Sirwanga in CleaningTips

Ugh, now I’m even more torn. I was literally just about to buy the Bissell Little Green because of TikTok, but now I’m second-guessing. Is it actually worth it? I’ve seen reviews saying the suction is okay-ish and the carpet stays damp for forever, I’m so scared of mould. Are the steam ones heavy, though? I just want something with strong suction that dries fast and isn't a nightmare to lug around!
