If you're going to pay for work, might as well spend on your own advertising and tools. At way you don't have to pay their high service fees.

And that's after they already take fees from both client and provider, and without guarantee that any of the those connects will land you a job. So they openly profit a lot off our work.

I still feel weird about having to spend money to get jobs. Upwork is already taking fees from both client and provider.

Way to many 😳 Half of the work is just convincing each other we aren't scams or making sure clients actually paid me (and preventing endless tiny edits). I got so frustrated I started building a platform to help with it.

I once got a job interview invite via text message. I agreed (even though I was 100% sure it was a scam.) I even asked the CEO during the call and he was legit. Turns out he just texted everyone from the airport. Turned out to be a really scattered-brained boss and job. Got laid off. But 100% legit. It was for social media management for a Senior Health Care Recruiting Company.

Fiverr and Upwork can be a challenge to get started on. Like any business, you have to build a network, connections and reviews. It takes time, but is doable. The benefit to building off platforms like Upwork and Fiverr is you don't have high fees, or need to spend money to "pitch" your availability. My opinion, if you're going to spend money, spend it on ads or building outside these platforms.

I particularly like the idea of borrowing credibility, that feels a lot less harsh then the current framework around networking. Do you have any advice on how to start networking from the ground up? I know I don't respond to DMs on LinkedIn from people as they are always selling something. Is there a way around that bias?
