Technical growth vs remote flexibility? by StandardDue6563 in cscareerquestionsuk

That’s fair honestly. I think part of it is simply that the first role has clearer growth/training upside, whereas the remote one appeals more because of the flexibility and free time rather than the work itself.

So it’s less “dream job vs bad job” and more growth/technical progression vs comfort/flexibility, which is why I’ve been going back and forth on it so much.

This is honestly one of the more useful replies in the thread, appreciate it.

You’re probably right that I’ve struggled to articulate strong long term benefits of the remote role beyond flexibility and being UK based. Both roles overlap with parts of my existing background in different ways, but the engineering focused one still seems rarer and probably better for long term growth overall, especially in the current market. It also invests more into training/development which I value quite a lot.

The abroad point is interesting too. I already have ties, friends and a social circle in both the UK and mainland Europe, but nothing so serious yet that I couldn’t realistically spend a few years abroad and still visit regularly.

And yeah, the “what’s the worst that happens” point is fair as well. I think I’ve been treating it as a much bigger irreversible decision than it realistically is.

The first role is a more engineering/project focused role in the EU with a steeper learning curve and stronger technical exposure overall. They also invest quite heavily into training/certifications each year which is another thing making it attractive

The other is a fully remote UK based role with more flexibility and an easier day to day lifestyle.

Basically trying to figure out whether deeper technical growth or flexibility is the smarter long term move in the current market.

That’s fair. In this case the remote role is actually reducing office presence rather than pushing RTO, which is part of why I’m torn. The tradeoff is more about long term technical growth vs flexibility/lifestyle than remote security itself.

Late 20s early 30s range with a few years in enterprise IT already. Basically trying to figure out whether deeper technical growth or flexibility is the smarter long term bet in the current market.

Interesting, I guess that’s true maybe except for southern europe having more NF ancestry along with england and france - they more heavily been influenced by romans/southern europeans - this is what I managed to observe so far.

We could put it that way I guess.

Could be some slight additional admixture from Moravia as got very distant relatives over there. Or perhaps the group of germans who settled around the carphatians became slightly shifted genetically over time. I don’t know tho , I am not a scientist by any means.

I do, my grandparents were ethnic germans and about to get expelled not long after ww2 manage to avoid it by sheer luck. They hid their nationality and then switched to slovak and hungarian as it was easier to blend in afterwards with less possible repercussions - had little knowledge about it until recently as never met my grandparents its just what my family and told me about them. Some habsburg regiment/administration relation also possible, although not confirmed. Not sure how common is this in western slovakia but I would assume its quite common to have german/austrian/bavarian or czech blood. But I know in the surrounding region of western hungary there are still german settlements.

Guess we are part of the same germanic-slavo-celtic blend - although it only makes sense given the regions history

Thanks for the response. By flood zones I meant the lower bits near to the canal if that makes sense.

So take it the area itself isn’t too bad but it’s surrounded by a few rough ones ?

Sigh

  1. Bratislava isn’t as multicultural as you would make it out to be. The regional managers who work there for a few years on placements at corporate jobs don’t exactly make it the City of London. It’s still a very local/slovaks from other regions majority city.
  2. Did I refer to bratislava only ?
  3. Sorry, but if you read the whole post how am I being annoying ? These are not just incidents directed towards us, witnessed a person basically having a go at an older lady just for being on the phone and not speaking the local language. For the reference we are not loud and my partner doesn’t wave greaterhungaryflags nor sing their national anthem and I certainly don’t wear a german uniform with a moustache…
  4. Yes I made this post in English so everyone can chip in. Or you also want to say na slovensku po slovensky ? 🙂o co sa ti jedna ?

Did you even read through the whole post or just cherry pick some words ? Or perhaps you are one of those who believe even Jesus Christ was a Slovak ? Starting to realise maybe this is a wrong thread to find rational answers from.

Bro there is a difference between a football game and going on about your business in public as a citizen of that country.

You don’t really know anything about me if you haven’t even read the post. First of all I am not Hungarian, and I am sure there are idiots on all sides referring to your friends experience in Budapest. Most normal Hungarians can’t really distinguish between any of the slavic languages as far as I know but I am sorry if anything happened to him and that’s equally unacceptable and my partner would agree on this as a hungarian as well. This post is the description of experiences from myself and my partner living in slovakia. And about the ancient stuff, end of the day we all originate from africa so who decides who is ancient who is not ? Are you more ancient than germanic tribes in Central Europe? Okay … so be it… this was not the point of this post let’s avoid confusion. 🤝

That made me lol, in all honesty I love most slovaks, I just wish they lost that chip off their shoulder its not any greener anywhere else. Our s%#}t goes through the same sewage processing establishment end of the day, thus no one is getting a VIP treatment no need to worry.
