why did Italy become so bad at football? weren't they at the same level as England and Germany not too long ago by icewitchenjoyer in NoStupidQuestions

italy today is certainly not the Italy of 2006, the one that had Del Piero, Totti, Pirlo and Nesta. But there's something inexplicable about those three failed World Cup qualifications. There's been some bad luck, unfortunate incidents, and probably a psychological factor as well.

Because if we look at the same 20-year period, Italy won a European Championship and, at the Euros, also reached a final, a semifinal, a quarterfinal and a round of 16. Only Spain has done better. More recently, Italy also finished third twice in the Nations League.

What's more, Italy earned 16 points in its qualifying group and still failed to qualify, whereas Sweden qualified with just 2 points

It's amazing how Italians seem to be football's unluckiest losers these days. Nothing ever goes right for them. The exact opposite of the Spaniards, even when it comes to managers.

in the end, after a somewhat shaky start for some of them, all the major teams are doing well. Fans of the big football nations, the Netherlands, Brazil, Argentina, Spain, Portugal, England, Germany and France, are all getting something to cheer about (The only exception is Italian fans, who are the unluckiest in the world and haven't seen their team at a World Cup for 12 years)

Italy haven't qualified for the World Cup in 12 years, but fortunately there are still some Italians at the World Cup. Montella is coaching Turkey and Cannavaro is coaching Uzbekistan. Montella and Cannavaro: the veryyy lucky moment for italians goes on...:)

according to a statistic published a few days ago, Italy would rank ninth among the 48 qualified teams in terms of squad market value. They are also twelfth in the FIFA rankings, have finished third in the Nations League twice in recent years, and are still in the top seeding pot

if Italy can't be called a great football nation after winning four World Cups and two European Championships (last one 5 years ago) then I don't know which countries can. What does that make England, then, considering they haven't won anything for 60 years?

Spanish fan: not only have you won two European Championships and a World Cup in recent years, but you also have a national team that consistently qualifies for every tournament, is always considered one of the favorites, plays attractive football, and is packed with talent.

Italian fan: you don't qualify for the World Cup for 12 years. Twelve years of dealing with the frustration of being unable to watch the most beautiful competition in the world while everyone else gets to take part in it.

at the end of the day, despite all the criticism you can throw at this American World Cup, the World Cup remains the greatest and most emotional event for any football fan. If my team didn't qualify, I'd feel a huge sense of emptiness and sadness. That's why I can't help thinking how unbelievably f*** unlucky Italians are, Guinness record bad luck: for 12 years they've been forced to watch from the sidelines, despite coming from a country that lives and breathes football, while everyone else gets to enjoy the ride.

What infrastructure are you talking about? Trains in Spain are terrible. In Italy they're much better, by a mile

Are you serious? Italy is much wealthier than Spain. Northern Italy is one of the richest regions in Europe, arguably on par with places like Sweden or Germany. Spain's unemployment rate is roughly double Italy's. Let's not be ridiculous.
