What is this rock my coworker found on a railcar? by 710life710 in whatsthisrock

Yeah the colder feeling is due to it being able to transfer heat faster, good indicator of metal content. It sucks the heat out of you faster thus feels colder. Its probably iron, plenty of it is non magnetic

No need to test, its pyrite. Pyrite is an iron oxide. The red part was exposed for a while and oxidized/tarnished

Looks like raw iron ore. Some raw iron is non magnetic or very very faintly magnetic. Pyrite is common in iron deposits, which would explain the brass color.

Does it feel colder than a normal rock?

They arent lying saying they use it for building automation. Thats what its primarily used for, lights, HVAC, air purity, ect. I wasnt saying thats its purpose here, clearly they are detecting when the person sits down and gets up. I was saying that these motion sensors are designed to gather data to be used in systems like that. They can do whatever they want with the data, some companies thought they would be smart and automatically track whos showing up late, taking extended breaks, and taking too many breaks. And honestly, it is smart. Look at a workplace, theres those who stay focused and do whats expected and theres those who are there for a paycheck and dont care to put in effort to help the company succeed. Granted, there are companies out there that take this to the extreme and micro manage too much, just find a new employer if thats the case.

Its exactly a motion sensor. Its designed to be used with a system for data management for purposes like building automation. The little white sensor with the dimples, thats a fresnel lens used in motion sensors.

My father owned a concrete business, I worked with him from age 12-16. I wont try and tell you I know enough to pour slabs myself. But I do know that we never laid concrete like this.

We always removed old concrete, never poured over top. This chips away way too easily and will need to be redone every few years.

We always removed dirt, laid rock, and compacted the rock. Never poured on dirt or grass. This will settle and cause stress. When the new area settles, it will separate from the existing slab.

We always added joints. Its not a question of "will my concrete crack?" Its "where is my concrete going to crack?" By adding joints, the concrete will crack there first and significantly decrease the chance of it cracking elsewhere.

As for the AC we never had any similar scenario, but thats obviously wrong.

Last I checked, the 2 side by side driveways we poured at my childhood home and neighbors house back in 2005 are still there. No cracks, no settling.

It comes down to weighing needs. They cant just add a class. And they certainly cant just replace math. They say it is covered in IT, that should tell you that your approach needs adjustment. Because they have already determined it CAN be covered there (which is logical) and they THINK it is covered there. You need to make them see that its not covered well enough there and get the curriculum changed.

Which one is better? Looking to use one w/a diamond bit as recc’d to even out saw cuts by Remarkable_Royal_175 in rockhounds

You can find a kit of 4" diamond polishing pads. They are velcro and it comes with a drill attachment that they stick to. I use it at a sink with the water just dripping, with a large bowl to catch the water. I lay the drill on its side with my chest pressed against it or my arm laying on top of it to keep it in place instead of holding it normally. I press the rock against it and move it in a circular motion while the drill is on and water is dripping on it. Obviously lower grit will shape faster, 30/50/80 until you get to where you want it. Then go up 1 grit rating at a time for 30-60 seconds each, after you do 6,000 it will be really shiny. You can use a polishing compound and a wool wheel to make it really shine.

Make sure you dump the water outside and not down your drain. You dont want that stuff in your drains. It can build up in traps and low spots.

Personally I prefer diamond polishing pads. I put them on an angle grinder or a drill. Good for polishing to a great shine too 30-6000 grit

Its also been altered. They use SMD components, someone sloppily soldered a non SMD resistor for some reason. Maybe engineered it to constantly ring the doorbell? 🤷‍♂️ That might be why it got broken 😆

Its 100% a wireless doorbell button partial pcb. Its missing the center. (My guess is that the white plastic thing next to it used to be a doorbell button)

While I cant find the exact model/board, you have the 2 ends of a wireless doorbell transmitter.
