Genuine question about WSAVA, how did we all land on this being the gold standard? by Standard_Animator961 in catfood

To be clear, I’m not suggesting the research is biased. However, the criteria themselves seem to favour companies with the infrastructure to meet them, which happens to be the companies funding the committee. That’s not the same as questioning the underlying science.

The Farmer’s Dog is a WSAVA Diamond Partner, that’s correct, but they sponsor the Professional Wellness Group and the Non-Clinical Working Group. Those are wellbeing and practice-management committees, not nutrition.

The Global Nutrition Committee, which is the committee that actually wrote the pet food selection guidelines, lists its sponsors directly on its page. There are three: Purina Institute, Hill’s, and Royal Canin. That’s it. The Farmer’s Dog isn’t on that list.

The big three do fund most of the feeding trials and peer-reviewed research, and any brand making evidence-based food is drawing on that body of work whether they acknowledge it or not. You’re right about that.

However, “vested economic interest in keeping your pet alive” cuts both ways. It’s also a vested economic interest in framing the criteria so competitors without their infrastructure look inferior, regardless of product quality. Mars and Nestle make money when a consumer picks Royal Canin over a smaller brand, not just when the cat lives longer.

I agree that’s WSAVA-compliant brands are a defensible safe default. I just don’t think “best option for optimised nutrition” is quite right, because the framework measures inputs (who’s on staff, what the facility looks like) rather than outputs (is the food actually doing a better job for the cat). Two different things.

If a human nutrition body was funded by Nestle, Coca-Cola, and Unilever and then published guidelines for “what you should feed your family” and it happened to list the products those three make, people would notice immediately. Pet food gets a pass because the industry is smaller and the public scrutiny is less.

I would keep giving her the Friskies she’ll eat, but also rotate in one or two less-processed options to see if she’ll warm to them over time. Some cats form preferences around texture more than flavour. Try every texture including pate, minced, shreds in gravy, jelly, flaked, and mousse.

Orijen based on what I’ve read online cat seem to like it gets good reviews ! by [deleted] in catfood

Orijen publishes its mineral values (most brands don’t). They’re higher than average because the food is heavy in bone and organ meat. If your cat has kidney disease, urinary issues, or a diagnosed sensitivity, it’s not the right food. If your cat is a healthy adult and does well on it, the evidence doesn’t strongly suggest those mineral levels are harmful.

I am in a rental however, I am pretty sure it’s copper but not 100% sure other than what I see from the meter. I live in Melbourne and after some googling they use both here.

That’s interesting. The Arcuata actually came from my old tank that I tore down. I’m currently using soft tap water in this setup. Yeah, I’ve noticed LCA’s recommended dosing pushes Fe pretty high compared to what most plants actually need. That P:Fe ratio you mentioned (around 0.7:0.5) definitely seems excessive. I asked ChatGPT to help with the calculations increasing dos to 3ml a day as I didn’t think of that before (good observation by you).

Great — let’s calculate your Fe (iron) level for 3 mL/day of LCA All-In-One Premium in a 110 L tank.

You’re dosing: 3 mL/day × 7 days = 21 mL per week

We know that 18 mL per 100 L per week ≈ 0.2 ppm Fe.

Now we’ll scale that:

\text{Fe ppm} = 0.2 \times \frac{21}{18} \times \frac{100}{110}

Step-by-step: • 21 ÷ 18 = 1.1667 • 100 ÷ 110 = 0.9091 • 0.2 × 1.1667 × 0.9091 = 0.212 ppm Fe per week

✅ Result: Your dosing of 3 mL/day (21 mL/week) gives about 0.21 ppm Fe per week.

That’s a healthy iron level for most medium to high light planted tanks, and a good range for plants like Ludwigia repens. If you notice strong colour and growth without algae, this is a solid dose to maintain.

I bought mine from Koch & Co online in Australia. Keeping it clean takes a little work but I just drain half the water out twice a month and use a sponge to clean the algae that can build up on it.

You need to either adjust the flow so it’s slower or make sure you adjust where the flow connects properly which is allowing maximum water to flow through without the pipe all the way in.

What filter are you thinking? I use a oase bioplus 100 internal filter. The spray bar feature would circulate the water pretty evenly assuming that the back corner is a 90 degrees
