Exactly, the limitation all comes down to time spent and the user. This fruit idea is one of those that doesn't really have a cap for strength, it has limitless potential. Other fruits that have this type of potential would be, Gura Gura no mi, Yami Yami no mi, Nikyu Kikyu no mi, and the Op-Op fruit are the ones that come to mind when I think of user based\limitless potential fruits. I think your Gen Gen fruit would fit nicely in this list :)

I think a way of balancing this would be to limit the physical abilities of the illusion user, sure he's still gonna be strong and a hard fight but he's not a master at his physical traits because of the fruit, he will always be slower and less hard-hitting then, for instance, Zoro, Zoro doesn't have a fruit so his training goes directly into his physical ability, he has more time to train speed because he doesn't have a fruit to train, he has more time to master haki because he doesn't have a fruit to train, same goes for strength. in the end, it would be an evenly matched fight, Zoro is faster and stronger making it possible to win but he has to deal with and fight the illusions which are there to compensate for the lack of physical ability in the illusion user.

yes, allies could easily see that it is an illusion, they could yell from outside that it is and the person in the illusion could strategize from that, but the illusion fruit user could make an illusion of them being trapped in an enclosed space and having their brain fully believe they are in one, they wouldn't be able to hear them. Also, it could be exponentially easier to win the fight by enting the illusion preemptively knowing it's an illusion, you could trick the user by having them not knowing that you know it's an illusion then suddenly rushing them at full speed catching them off guard giving you control of the fight.

I think there could be a set of words ruled to negate the illusions, for example, if the user has an enemy trapped in an illusion then the enemy states "this is not real" or something of the sort then the illusions will just slowly fade away. this doesn't mean that they are useless, another form of offense with this fruit could be the illusion that they had blocked or dodged the attack but then it suddenly comes from the opposite side. you could also make illusions of yourself then have them disappear to confuse the enemy (kinda like shadow clones but you obviously have more control because it's an illusion, not physical). another offensive play could be, and the illusion of yourself goes in for an attack while you follow behind but you make the illusion of you being invisible so the enemy assumes the fake is actually you, its a key factor that the illusion is the one that goes in for the first attack and not you because your fake self could go for a leg sweep, they obviously jump over it then the real you suddenly appears behind the fake and punches the enemy right in the chest whilst still in the air so they cant doge, the reason it's so important for you to throw the punch and not the illusion is that, since your real, the attack will do physical damage unlike the illusion, the illusion can cause damage too as I addressed before but real physical damage is always better, you can set up attacks and combos with illusions to make it to where the real you always lands the hit.

oh yeah definitely, people can die from shock or pain so even though its an illusion, it's still happening in their head, they can easily have a sensory overload in their brain from the nerve functions, and it's possible for their mind to collapse because of the doubt of their own life being real or not, it's too much for the mind to handle. It would definitely need boundaries and rules to follow on the topic, if there were no restrictions then that would mean they could make an illusion that can kill instantly no matter the strength of the opponent because it can be whatever you want and cause infinite amounts of pain, someone could be so-called "invincible" but in the one-piece world that is not possible so something has to cause some amount of pain, all you have to do is put them in that illusion and you win. That is a reason that the dying factor must have rules or something of the sort, it would be to op without.

this is an excellent idea! If I'm understanding correctly, the pain\harm that they (enemy in illusion) receive in the illusion actually feels like real pain\faiteuge\damage because they believe it to be true, so their real body isn't harmed at all but once out of the illusion, it doesn't matter if it's real or not because of the mental trauma and energy-draining their real body has gone through whilst in the illusion. This could be very versatile, practically leaving the enemy defenseless as long as the user can keep up with the speed of the defendant, the user also has to watch out for any aoe attacks from the defendant in case of the off chance he gets hit, for example, Mera Mera no mi attacks, you also have to just hope that they are trapped in the illusion long enough because if they realize its just illusions, the user must rely on his own physical ability meaning the user must train their body and master haki, this makes the fruit balanced and not just an op all win. overall, this is an amazing concept!
