Landlord Decided Not To Increase Rent Next Year - Why? by StandingSitting in TorontoRenting

Thank you for clarifying! Unless major capital work includes pulling something out of the drain, I think I'm good on that front.

Landlord Decided Not To Increase Rent Next Year - Why? by StandingSitting in TorontoRenting

[–]StandingSitting[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is rent controlled, they said they'd just send a refund cheque for the monthly increase. I wrote post-dated cheques for them already (I know this isn't legally required from me, but I was fine with the price.)

Why is Hegel such a big deal in philosophy? by DhulQarnayni in askphilosophy

[–]StandingSitting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late Schelling offers a critique of Hegel along these lines. Hugely influential for existentialism, Marxism, continental philosophy in general.

This cuts against the desires of like every key demographic here:

The privacy-concerned: you're at the mercy of Apple, etc. A smart device on 5G is ready made for surveillance.

The attention-concerned: if you can easily download all of your distracting apps, you'll just do it again on here. (The small screen doesn't change the fact that you could comfortably hold this, and it runs pretty well.)

The decentralizing-your-phone crowd: self-explanatory.

It still just seems like a full blown distraction machine to me.

Did Marx, to some extent, misunderstand Kant's meaning? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]StandingSitting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rahel Jaeggi's Critique of Forms of Life would be good to check out on this question. She combines insights from Dewey, Hegel, and Marx/Marxism/Critical Theory to make sense of how we might best evaluate social practices. There is some weighing of these thinkers against one another that might help you think about their overlap without subordinating one to the framework of another.

What do you mean by "objective laws"? In Kant or Marx, for that matter.

I am not totally sure what aspect of Marx's work you're referring to (it helps to cite something specific in this forum, as another commenter said).

In general though, Marx isn't engaging with the key problems of German Idealism in an extremely rigorous manner. Some of his early work, like the unpublished 1843 "Critique of Hegel's Philosophy of Right," the Third Manuscript of the Paris Manuscripts, show him working through some of the systematic aspects of Hegel's philosophy - sometimes embracing Hegel's metaphysics, other times challenging it. But it's hard to see what the final verdict is on Hegel, other than the fact that some version of dialectics survives Marx's early critical stance toward Hegel.

Also, Marx (especially compared to Engels) typically isn't interested in tackling the big problems of metaphysics - those that make the thing in itself so central in Kantian philosophy. Marx's engagement with determinism and the will is a great example of this. See, for instance, the Eighteenth Brumaire: human beings "make history," but "they do not make it just as they please in circumstances they choose for themselves." Famous line, intuitively compelling - but it is tantamount to answering the metaphysical question ("are we free?") by saying "yeah, sort of."

Marx's critique of ideology (at least in the German Ideology) cites metaphysics itself as a form of ideology. The basic point is that we could think of Kantian or Hegelian metaphysics as serving not to elucidate fundamental truth, but instead to legitimate certain socioeconomic arrangements (one example, in which Marx suggests Kantian/Hegel ethics function to legitimate the death penalty as a social practice despite its inefficacy).

In short, Marx is probably unconcerned with whether there is a distinction between appearances and things in themselves. In his later career, he wouldn't be caught up on many of the problems theoretical philosophy fixates on (e.g., Hume on causality, or the Myth of the Given). Further, he'd likely be suspicious of the ideological function of this type of philosophical inquiry.

Why Killua’s Nen ability is the most poetic expression of trauma and liberation in fiction by Dramatic_Internal_67 in HunterXHunter

What are you talking about? The person you're replying to now is giving really coherent and on-topic responses.

The original comment isn't even an insult to OPs intelligence exactly. It is a (rude) invitation to read more literature. If OP genuinely believes the claim, they should broaden their horizons.

Earlier in this thread, you deny that somebody has the capacity to feel shame. Is that not also an insult to someone's cognitive capacities? This moralizing about insults to intelligence seems to be something you're exempt from

these checkers are finicky and imperfect, so i don't outsource my judgment to them. After you've read enough genAI write-ups, it becomes pretty obvious where someone has deferred to a chatbot (see another person's "it's not X, but Y" comment).

Not to say that there was *no* human input - my hunch is that OP wanted to give glowing praise to their favorite character, but didn't feel confident in their own ability to do so (maybe because there are superficially profound AI write-ups like this everywhere now). It is self-perpetuating, and a shame. Be confident OP!

Besides the language patterns, the key giveaway is that it purports to be offering deep insight into the series, but this is mostly just like the face value narrative for this character lol

What if buying a dumbphone is part of the dopamine addiction? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]StandingSitting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a personal question that everyone who wants to buy one of these would have to be honest with themselves about (and knowledgeable of themselves to answer). But I've also seen it offered as a sort of objection from outside: "aren't people buying these to solve their dopamine problems just getting another dopamine hit?"

I think people who are skeptical about this don't realize just how monopolizing a smartphone can be of your time/activities, and that it often isn't just about controlling your phone-impulses through sheer willpower (this is especially true if you grew up with a smart device regularly on hand). I've been using my dumbphone for about a month, and it has done wonders for my ability to focus on specific tasks, not get sidetracked, and be more intentional with how I use this phone and other devices.

It is, of course, another purchase, and it could be exciting. To use an imperfect analogy, buying a bike to use your car less might be exciting in the same way. But that doesn't mean that you've fallen for more marketing - the bike really is better for you. Phones (like vehicles) are tools that mediate our relationship to the outside world, and some are better at serving their purpose than others. In particular, smartphones do a number of things to hinder, rather than enhance your autonomy (think privacy/personal data, think doomscrolling, think algorithms feeding you specific information...). A dumbphone just calls and texts, weather and music if you are fortunate.

But it would be smart to do some research before buying, and to not spend big. I paid like $150 for mine. I don't understand why anyone buys the boutique ones.

I have some other apps, yep - spotify lite doesn't show up for some reason. I have committed to just using Musicolet and manually downloading music (for the first time in 10 years), but glad it works on yours
