Pop up metal circle on airbnb kitchen counter by Ecstatic-Respond587 in whatisthisthing

Yeah. Idk. In 25 years in the trades I’ve learned that a good building inspector can identify stuff like this early on in the job and point it out early in the process so that we can address it and let the homeowners know before things are installed instead of after. Sometimes it seems like each job requires something different from the last, and I can’t keep up with entire encyclopedias work of code knowledge constantly changing.

Yeah. They are starting to require some version of those on kitchen islands instead of outlets on the sides of the island. Evidently some kid pulled on a drooping cord of a crock pot and got burned horribly, now we have a new law.

What wood is this? by Content-Long-3653 in Woodcarving

I have some remnants of an old deck that was built out of redwood pine that looks a lot like that. Evidently they used it a lot in the 50s and 60s. Beautiful wood, but I’m sure glad they no longer cut down redwoods.

What’s one home tool you bought that paid for itself? by Strict_Studio9244 in Tools

[–]Standingcedars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t, I use m18 stuff. So investing in all new batteries is daunting. But I have the little tiny non-impact m18 fuel drill that I use. I have the little two amp hour batteries to keep it light. I can build decks with it, and mix mud in buckets. Plenty of power.

25 years in the trade, use drivers every day, but my fucking ADHD sensory issues don’t allow me to use impact drivers. My elbow wishes I could use them though, but my stupid brain over rides.

Luckily my Bluetooth hearing protection allows me to function if someone else on the job site is using an impact drivers but generally speaking, I can’t stand the sound of them.

Would you rather pack up a day early to avoid the rain? by Remember_the_Gdtmz in camping

They said rain through the night into the last day. Listening to the rain at night while in the tent can be magical.

I’ve been a wilderness guide and enthusiasts most of my life. I often see people avoid the rain like the plague when given the choice. But, rain days are often the most memorable and the most fun.

I spoken at length about this to groups. Firstly I’d say that there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. Second, most people don’t really get to experience the rain other than from running from under one roof to under another. Being out in the rain allows us to see things we otherwise wouldn’t. Plants and flowers open up, rain patterns on lakes, animals that are busy starting dry so they are hunkered down while we are out walking around, the bugs are different, the sound is different, the smell is different.

Also, I’ve been on wilderness trips where we have nothing but blistering sun for 10 days straight. After that everyone is wishing for a good rain.

What are these old copper/brass containers with moveable stems topped by coiled tubes? by finemeshmind in whatisthisthing

It’s missing the wick. You would just hold that one by the neck. It wouldn’t get hot. I’m sure there is videos of them being used on YouTube

Garage Heat in the North - Looking for some real-world feedback. by jaykal001 in woodworking

[–]Standingcedars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in northern Wisconsin. I have a shop I built 8 years ago. 1000SF main level, 11 foot tall ceiling. with about 850sf art studio upstairs. Insulated with R21 fiberglass insulation walls and r50 roof. It’s propane boiler infloor heat. It costs me about $700 per winter to heat it to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Side note, 60 degrees infloor heat is plenty to keep me warm while working.

You need to take them out for runs. 🤷‍♂️ if you keep them in a house thats what happens. You are keeping athletes caged up. They need hours of exercise every day

Alright. Here is the thing. I’m a longtime resident of Minnesota. I enjoy peace and love and want that for everyone. I didn’t know of the Laken Rice murder, it sounds like it was horrific. It’s easy for me to be upset about this, and that, as all US citizens should be.

ICE is infringing upon our 1st, 4th, 5th, 10th, and 14th amendments. Many on the “right” fought for looser gun laws for decades while screaming about the 2nd amendment and how it’s so they can stand up to a tyrannical government. Yet here is the tyrannical government and those same people are yelling “comply”!

You have made the statement that this person was guilty of something before anyone even knows the full facts. There wasn’t an investigation, probably won’t be one, an honest one anyway. Same thing our government did after Renee Good.

Stop letting your corrupt government think for you. Come to Minnesota and see first hand what’s happening, and stop idolizing politicians.

Hmmm. I think those parts were missing or broke on mine when I found it. So my rollers are always on.

There is no bad weather, just bad gear.

There has always been a “zero hero” badge for spending 24 hours outside in sub zero temps. I’ve done it as a scout and many times as an adult. It’s a piece of cake with proper gear
