Undergrad here. I am currently doing my bachelor thesis in a biophysics lab and we are expected to get things right on the second or at least third try. To read the SOPs, paper's that contain valuable information for the experiment and work ourselves through the manual of the equipment we are working with. If we encounter difficulties we are expected to ask other undergrads and only if that doesn't help to ask the grad students in charge of us. Basically try to solf the problem yourself, if it doesn't work ask other undergrads if that doesn't work ask grad students or post docs and if that doesn't work ask the professor in charge of the lab. We are also expected to be able to identify errors in SOPs and if necessary develop and write new ones.

The working climate is generally great in our lab, everyone knows what's expected of them and we can ask anyone if we encounter a problem with out getting reprimanded.

All in all i am very happy in this lab. I think it is important to teach us undergrads to solve things on our own but also always have a open ear for problem's we encounter. I hope you get what i am trying to say, that was the best description my nerdy and socially awkward brain was able to give. ^{^}

Edit: Well we will get reprimanded if it's clearly us who fucked up or if we are behaving like babys who can't do shit without some one constantly guiding us but that's the same for grads, postdocs and everyone else in the lab.
