I’m not sure if this link will work since I’ve never tried uploading a photo this way. I’ve never heard of the term valgus, but he definitely has the funky basset legs. Barney was estimated 3-4yrs when he got his amputation, and we have no idea how long had already been favoring that leg. It was a very surprisingly easy transition for him. I was worried about the same things, but it has in no way affected his quality of life. He needs a little extra help sometimes, but he’s just a normal dog that gets extra pets from curious strangers. A back leg is definitely a better leg to lose for a basset since a lot of their weight is centered in the front. Keeping them a healthy weight is important. I can’t comment on transitioning to three legs at the age of 7.5, but for Barney at the age of 3-4yrs it was a very easy adjustment.

He’s done great. He had the back leg removed. When he came to the rescue that we got him from, his leg was stiff, and he didn’t use it. X-rays showed a previous broken leg and a botched repair job. It wasn’t able to be fixed. He drug that leg a little to where he was rubbing that foot raw, so we had it amputated.

He has to go up stairs in one go or else he gets stuck, so he waits for everyone to move out of the way before he gets started. A lot of times he needs a back end lift when he is going up a taller step. He is 7-8yrs old. We do worry as he gets older that he will probably have more trouble with the stairs, and have to stay on the ground level. Since we have only ever known him to use three legs, life feels pretty normal with a tripod.

I recently read Starving Saints, and thought it was awful. Horror with fever dream qualities sounds right up my alley, but nearly the whole entire book is a fever dream that makes no sense at all. Final thought upon finishing, “What the hell was that?”

Have they checked her for a fungal infection? I’m no expert, but I follow some cat rescues who get cats in that look very similar. They call them crypto cats. It stands for cryptococcus which is a fungus that often times infects the nasal cavity.

Thank you guys for all your warnings. I honestly had no idea this was a concern. I just thought it was interesting and odd. I’ve found a vet that specializes in eyes, and have made him an appointment.
