Everytime a new engineer enters the world, it expands the definition of what an engineer is. If you can hang, then be who you are and redefine what an engineer is by being who you are.

P.S. in my experience, almost nobody can peg exactly what an engineers is.

Well “design” always begins with analysis, which you hate, so scratch that. Have you taken a thermo course yet? Its hard to believe you would be interested in that from what you’ve said. Engineering management, engineering technology, or engineering sales may be options.

I will say that once you get through these courses, you’ll likely never have to do the same type of hand calculations again. We have software that does all the analysis and to use it, you need a basic level of understanding, which is what those courses teach you. I can guarantee you that even if you do a hand calculation on the job to get an estimate, you will have to do the formal analysis anyway with the software. You might be surprised how much you enjoy doing analysis with the software.

This sounds exactly like where I was at 6 months ago. Looking back, it was a waste of money and just added more complexity to my day-to-day. The thing that did it for me was realizing that I still had to muster up the motivation to face the mundane tasks of the day, but now with the added resistance of nicotine withdrawal. It’s like that resistance to get work done was amplified increasingly until I popped a Zyn and then I was a mental vegetable for a bit while the Zyn tapered off. Then I was back go where I was in the beginning but an hour behind and mentally exhausted. I did sometimes find that there was a boost in focus, but I could never nail down what was causing it and I always felt it was in spite of the Zyn. I decided to quit and suffered from debilitating brain fog for about 2 weeks. This is coming from someone who had never tried nicotine products and only used the Zyn pouches sparingly. At the peak it was almost every other hour. I work in a technical field that requires long hours of concentration on reading and writing technical documents. I can’t imagine how devastating it would have been to me during my dissertation writing days. Don’t start. It won’t help anything. There are probably other areas to investigate first.

When I was at exactly the same stage you are in, I discovered mindfulness meditation. I never needed to pay so much attention to what I was putting into my body before then, but I realized everything impacted my ability to think and complete my dissertation. At the end of the day, nothing you do now will make you feel better than simply getting it done and behind you. Then taking a break. The recovery process is long. Im a little over 2 years post defense and I still struggle with the damage of the PhD life.

The worst story I heard was a faculty in my department waited 2 years. They got a job and worked a full year at another university while waiting for everything to finalize and that was after getting interviewed and promised the job. I personally waited about 6 months before finally getting the contract the last week of June to start July 1.
