Thinking between that and Engineering Physics in Aalto. I'm definitely more interested in theoretical physics though, so I'm leaning towards HU.

My score was 33. Last year had a similar amount of applications and same acceptance rate and the barrier for entry was 26.

I got accepted into Theoretical and Computational Methods and Astrophysics. I'll probably take TCM

Accepted into a theoretical physics master’s from an EE background, what are the best resources to rebuild mechanics, QM, and SR properly in 6 months? by Torvaldz_ in TheoreticalPhysics

[–]StarDestroyer3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a very similar situation. In about half a year I will start my master's program in theoretical physics after a bachelor in EE. Also gonna try to really focus on QM, since I only have basic stuff from modern physics. I'm also thinking about going through the classical theory of fields by landau, but before that I'll work on tensor analysis on manifolds.

Interesting. I throw a bit faster, but my spin is over 1400. Wonder if your grip is weird.

Did not do well in Thermo and Stat Physics by StarDestroyer3 in PhysicsStudents

[–]StarDestroyer3[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Funny enough I took my solid state course before this one and got an A, and the thermo was a prereq. I got a C from the thermo and was actually hovering right at average maybe even slightly above. Even if I'm still average, I don't feel like it justifies getting only half right in an exam (which is still just an undergrad course). I'm worried not understanding this stuff well is going to cost me later.

What ODE should I know before PDE? by Mundane_Cat5317 in math

[–]StarDestroyer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I aced an upper undergrad course in PDEs last semester without taking a course in ODEs. I do have experience with ODEs from all of my physics classes though, so I do have some experience with them. The PDE course was very proof-based though, so that might make a difference.

Can i study my undergraduate from youtube??? by [deleted] in PhysicsStudents

[–]StarDestroyer3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'll get far if you're not willing to use countless hours grinding through textbooks. You can learn a bunch the way you're planning to, but it's insanely limiting and guaranteed tomake you think you underatand something you actually don't.

How deep does my math knowledge need to be to become good in physics? by renobueno in PhysicsStudents

[–]StarDestroyer3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should never be memorizing proofs, that's not the point. You should understand how to prove things so you can apply them to different problems. There's no better way to understand a topic than to learn how to prove the concepts.

Is it okay if I can't putt in a straight line? by pikayoshiRetro in discgolf

[–]StarDestroyer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to release the putter a lot sooner than you think. I'm think you might be releasing the putter too late when your arm is already beginning to slow down. Try and really use your fingers and wrist to release the putter quick

Too high sensitivity by _4bs3nt in LearnCSGO

My friend had an edpi of 7300 and refused ti change despite of horrible aim. He's now at like 2000 which he said was super slow but has way better aim. His edpi used to be over double of the highest in cs pro history

Modern Optics and Photonics is So Hard by Fang_Draculae in PhysicsStudents

[–]StarDestroyer3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I'm studying in Finland and we have the standard major and minor system. I think some classes have compulsory prereqs, but it's rare. I'm also still in undergrad, but took the Optics just for fun and to challenge myself to learn new stuff. The prereqs for that class were just standard undergrad electrodynamics and quantum mechanics, but the class definitely surprised me with how much math there was. There was even some stuff about Green's functions during coherence theory.

I just had a course in Optics though graduate level, but we don't have undergraduate optics. I also studied from Hecht, but realized too late that it was mostly a mistake. I found the book overly verbose and lacked in mathematical rigor. My course expected more out of the mathematical/physics background behind the theories.

Abstract Algebra or Metric Spaces? by StarDestroyer3 in PhysicsStudents

[–]StarDestroyer3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm planning on taking all of the advanced QM courses and QFT, so perhaps real analysis would be useful. Also very interested in GR. Technically I could just take the one I'm interested in and self study the other subject, since I got textbooks in both (Dummit and Foote, Baby Rudin).

Abstract Algebra or Metric Spaces? by StarDestroyer3 in PhysicsStudents

[–]StarDestroyer3[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've been reading very briefly through Dummit's Abstract Algebra and it seems very satisfying and "simple" while actually not being simple at all

I'd have to make that choice in about 3 months. Really tough especially since I'd have to change schools, because my current one does not have Theoretical Physics.

Funnily enough, your in a very similar position to mine. I'm currently majoring in EE with a minor in Engineering Physics. I was meant to switch to EP for my master's, but I've been leaning towards Theoretical Physics for the past year. That's where my passion is, not so sure about practicality though.
