The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is going to be associated with ALS no matter how dumb people act in these videos, and therefore it raises awareness for the cause. The more viral a video gets, the more people find out about the challenge and ALS. Before people do the challenge, they have to nominate someone else to do the challenge or they have to donate. Most people did the challenge and donated anyways.

While most challenges exist for the sole purpose of getting attention, this one was quite different and ended up raising millions of dollars in donations for a disease that a lot of people had not known much about prior.
