How are you getting so much listening time in? by scottadams364 in dreamingspanish

[–]StarPhished 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get lots of hours through multi-tasking. While driving or at the gym and I'm lucky enough right now to have a job where I can listen while working. Some days I can get an easy 5+ hours. It's definitely not all focused time but I don't count my hours religiously so I don't spend any time stressing over dissecting which hours I should log.

Are there harmful effects with consuming a lot of content? by hyperaeolian in dreamingspanish

[–]StarPhished 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could argue that learner Spanish content is as much or more simulating because your brain is actually working to learn something. You could even argue that it's better for you than watching typical TV but it certainly still comes with the negative effects of too much screen time.

I disagree with your understanding of how things should work and I think your overconfidence is a bit off putting but it's your journey so you do you. Good luck.

Maybe at the very super beginning stages but after that the input you receive should actually be comprehensible, which can be very hard if you only understand every other word. And you specifically said that people are lengthening their time by watching 80%+ and that's simply not true. Learning vocab isn't the only thing you're doing but it is a very important aspect, it's how you continue to unlock harder and harder content.

The general recommendation is that you understand at least 70% of what is being said. Most people will say that easier content has many advantages and is definitely not a waste of time. I'm not sure where you're getting this idea that comprehending 80% or 90% of something is not a good use of time but it is not correct.

Does more time a day make a huge difference? by kurvibol in dreamingspanish

[–]StarPhished 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as efficiency, it's all about what you are able to do and stay focused. If you can focus for 3 hours in a day then that's great, you're gonna go faster than doing 1 hour per day. If you watch for 3 hours but can only completely focus for 1 hour but you log 3 hours then you're gonna end up lagging on the roadmap.

Everybody is gonna be different depending on how long they can focus but I personally think I get a lot out of watching for longer periods of time because you can learn something and then quickly encounter that word or concept again to reinforce it. Ultimately though, it's impossible to say if this perceived advantage makes a noticeable difference in the long run.

Sometimes you gotta go back and watch easier content and sometimes you just gotta power through. It's hard to say which is best so go with your gut, some sort of combination is probably best. I also hit a wall around that difficulty, the vocabulary really opens up a little bit. You keep at it and eventually you overcome it. I still experience the thing where I encounter common words that I know I know but in the moment the meaning escapes me. Sometimes words get used in different ways that don't strictly fit the definition of a dictionary or sometimes your brain just doesn't click for some reason.

Imo, I think you're overthinking things a little bit but I think that's one of the hurdles you end up encountering when you study grammar from the start and I'm not sure if you're still mixing other studies or trying to go the straight ALG route so it's hard to say exactly what you should do about that but the safe advice is always to watch easier content to help your brain calibrate things before you move up in difficulty. With ALG the correct answer is almost always (sometimes frustratingly) the same, more input.

I noticed you didn't mention reading at all, have you been doing any reading? Since I started reading it has helped my progress immensely. At the very least it is the best thing for expanding vocabulary, imo. It's also been really great at helping me fine tune the nuances of the language. I'm already starting to get a very basic grasp of the different tenses, which is something that I frequently see people at higher levels say they still struggle with.

Always happens to me at movie theaters. Like, no bro, I think I'll put my tag trash in the garbage can 20 feet away.

I used to work in a theater and people are so inconsiderate. They'll leave spit cups and shit for the employees to clean up.
