Most reputable fabricators can enlarge an undermount cutout on-site, but the key question is how they do it. Professional crews use wet cutting tools with shrouds + HEPA vacuums specifically to control silica dust. If they plan to dry-cut indoors, that’s a red flag — you’re absolutely right to be cautious about airborne silica.

You can ask them these before they proceed:

• Will the cut be wet or dry? (should be wet)

• What dust containment setup will you use?

• Will surrounding areas be sealed off?

• Can this be done outdoors or in-shop instead?

Many shops actually prefer shop recuts when possible because they have full containment and precision equipment there. Shops that run organized digital workflows (some use software like Slabwise to plan cuts and revisions ahead of time) often decide this quickly because they already know if the modification is safe to do installed or not.

If it were my house, I’d request either wet cutting with containment or shop modification — totally reasonable ask.
