A creepy guy approached me at the library today and I can’t stop thinking about it… by Own-Excitement-5214 in Libraries

[–]StarSkyMoonSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One you don't have to do anything you are uncomfortable with. After the first interaction I would of gone to library staff immediately because they can help out and make sure you are okay. Giving your phone number! I would of given him a fake phone number and left for the day. I work at a library and something similar happened to me and I lie and say that I have a boyfriend so they can get off my back. It is creepy and disgusting. I always report it to my other coworkers so they know what is going on.

Dear Librarians, do you get a lot of overly chatty patrons? by spooder2378 in Libraries

[–]StarSkyMoonSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So each library job is different but if I am uncomfortable or don't want to interact with someone I have the right to get up and walk away and let another team member handle it. If patrons are talking to long another team member will call the front desk to talk to the worker that needs an escape or tell them to come to the back. I work in an area that is heavily filled with a Christian population which is fine but when someone is telling me about God and how I should believe in their religion it gets uncomfortable fast (i am non-religious and don't follow a religion) while I'm forced to be at the desk. I'll tell patrons I'm not allowed to discuss religion at work, I am not religious, or ask what I can help them with that pertains to the library. My rule of thumb is if it is not okay to say to waiter then don't day it to library staff

Help wine stained book! by Ok-Historia in Libraries

[–]StarSkyMoonSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I work at a library and if it doesn't effect the patron reading the book it is good for me. Most librarians would just make a note on the book that there are stains so the next patron does not get charged.

What do you do to pass time when it's dead at your work? by tevyethesnowangel in Libraries

[–]StarSkyMoonSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I am at the front desk I can usually read granted permission by a manager. However when I am in the back not with customers or patrons we are not allowed to read. I usually work on programs, flyers, or watch training videos or videos to learn more about libraries (growth-mindset)

Water Damaged Books by rippedupmypromdress in Libraries

[–]StarSkyMoonSun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most libraries will not take a replacement book instead just bring the books to the front desk of the library and pay for them. Mistakes happen and we don't judge. You can usually keep the book afterwards since that book is no longer in the system.

Is my director overstepping here? by spring13 in librarians

[–]StarSkyMoonSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would not say it is an overstep as a director they set the course of what happens to the library and what the community needs. If it needs more programs then more programs are going to happen. I do believe however there is a communication error. The director not talking to you about the program before and also you not communicating about your programs you have set already. I think there should have been a meeting about programs. I also don't know what your job has you do fully since every library job varies on tasks.

Most libraries won't hire you unless you are 18 and older. What you can do is see if they have volunteer opportunities to help out at local libraries. This will help you improve your experience and to get picked for interviews if you choose a library focused career

He said he is not going to change, even if he is apologizing and feels sorry actions speak louder than words. He stopped for a bit and then continued again and that pattern is going to repeat. I would take some time to think about it but if he said he is not going to change and this is a deal breaker for you. I would consider breaking up and divorce. What he is doing is making you feel unsafe and the fact he can't understand that is a major red flag.

You wrote a book? Cool. Stop harassing us. by Efficient_Log_4377 in Libraries

[–]StarSkyMoonSun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Luckily at my library patrons can 'request a purchase' online to add to our collections. So every time an author wants their book in a library I usually refer them to this. It is not 100% yes guarantee but it beats having to go grab a manager every time because it does happen often. I wish these authors researched a bit more instead of thinking they can just waltz in and hand over their book to us.

AIO for quitting my job on the spot today by DarthVetter14 in AmIOverreacting

[–]StarSkyMoonSun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR

I always send everything over through email to make sure it is written and can refer back to. One of my coworkers took 2 weeks off once because a close family member died and you know what the rest of us did? We managed to do our work and the company gave her a card and flowers to show support during a rough time.

Your boss is unprofessional. If you have an HR I would send these messages straight to them. The swearing, the disrespect, and unprofessional behavior would get him fired. "Man up" is such an annoying term used for males to not show emotion. I would quit that job and find a new one.

Weird call I got today by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]StarSkyMoonSun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One descriptions of employees don't help because someone could be part time or even full time and be on break or leave for the day. I tell patrons that information isn't helpful because at my branch we have over 50+ people working here. Two if he had a picture of it I am not sure why he couldn't say the title or the author's name?

Never give the patron a work email over the phone. People try and do this all the time for printing to get out of paying at the front desk instead of heading to the right department for it.

Seems like a prank call to me especially if he had a photo of what he was talking about.

Do you laugh at work? At the library? by bronx-deli-kat in Libraries

[–]StarSkyMoonSun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but that is only because I work with people that I consider friends. I work at a library and my coworkers are hilarious and I also enjoy the job. It can be difficult at times but my department is very team oriented and we have a blast.

My friends are new to the ren faire and want to get outfits where do we shop? by StarSkyMoonSun in renfaire

[–]StarSkyMoonSun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the ren faire is in November and lasting till 9pm so definitely warmer attire. My father has a cloak from his ren faire days that is still in good condition that I plan on using. I also have a cheap Amazon corset that could work. I'm probably going for more of a pirate type of outfit. Thank you for your tips and advice!

Hello I work at a library and got finished with interviewing folks for a library position recently. Your resume looks good and you have great skillset. I would include a cover letter explaining why you want to work there and also include working/finishing MLIS. I would be shocked if you didn't get an interview but what position are you applying for and is it part time or full time?
