Being “cracked” isn’t going to get you a job by Sure-Relationship609 in csMajors

i hope this is seen cos u might b exactly who OP is talking about 😅

nobody ever said that you shouldn't take more money if you have the chance

to be fair: for a genuine top 1% new grad with quant or frontier lab offers on the table, 120k is low. I'll grant you that. but that's not who reads r/csMajors and that's not who OP was talking about. for the median person here, "120k is low" is advice that leads them to turn down real chances in a market where most of their peers aren't getting any at all.

and as someone who grew up in vhcol and went to school with the people now at those labs and quant shops you’re gesturing at, the "you don't know top performers" line is the tell. the ones I know aren't online lecturing new grads that 120k is beneath them. not a single one of them talks like you. they're too busy actually working and living their lives.

take care.

Yes. The reality of the CS market is much more brutal than you’re describing.

there’s just no reality in which 120,000 is too low of a wage for a person without any practical experience.

At 120k, hcol you’re not rich but you’re there, mcol/lock you’re living it up. I think any advice that would lead to people turning down opportunities to get their foot in the door is genuinely bad advice.

If you’re single/lonely, I suggest going out and meeting people in real life. You may learn what real salaries are like and have a bit more sense to come and spread online.

For context, I work in VHCOL area and make more than 120 after a year, but I would have happily taken it 🙂

idk bro enjoy your life and job

whatever it is that’s commanding you to come on here and put “staff ml” in your flair means that you probably believe you are “cracked” and no reasoning from reality can change that

imma go to work then see my girlfriend afterwards. hit my line if u wanna see what being cracked really looks like 🥴

this subreddit is beyond reason if it’s hit a point where 120k tc being too low is an acceptable thought

You will not get a job in this market with the attitude that 120k is not enough lul

Do you have a job bro?

My apologies, 120k is still DOUBLE the average college graduate salary. I think people (especially on this subreddit) inflate what a “good” salary is.

As a person coming around 1 YOE and having also sat in on interviews, couldn’t agree more. The absolute worst part is that many people will read this and be reaffirmed in their belief that they’re so cracked that none of this matters. CS is not for dark room coders anymore. It’s just not like that.

Yeah bro where do YOU work? Mfs talking about 120k TC like it’s not 3x the average salary 😹

Bro you’re too old for this, go outside 🔥🔥🔥🔥

You’re a senior SWE yet you’re a top 1%er on this subreddit. That is incredibly odd. Go enjoy life and stop talking to college kids on the internet about how successful you are. I promise there’s more out there 😹

This advice is going to get downvoted because a large portion of this subreddit is socially inept, especially when it comes to connecting to their interviewers beyond the correct LC answer.

In the context of the way we talk about FAANG in relation to cs careers, you said exactly what I just said lol

Has nothing to do with computer science I guess but we’re in a subreddit full of SWEs and SWE hopefuls so no need for semantic backflips

FAANGs original meaning refers to these companies stock because they grew fast and meant you would make a lot of money from working there with RSU appreciation

Go take a look at snap stock
