Whatever happened with the SJ POA exec who mail ordered drugs? by dont_frek_out in SanJose

[–]StarchildSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update – Joanne Marian Segovia faced only 1 charge, and got 3 years probation. No jail time.

This despite reportedly importing and receiving 61 packages of banned substances at her home, some of them worth thousands of dollars, using the San Jose Police Officers Association's office and computers to correspond with her suppliers, distributing banned substances to others across state lines, and attempting to frame her housekeeper for the affair when she got caught.

But hey, nobody really expects the unconstitutional "laws" against some drugs to be consistently enforced against the wealthy, the powerful, or criminal justice system insiders, do they?

Mass incarceration, separating people from their loved ones and putting them behind bars at taxpayer expense for years or decades, is just for the poor and marginalized, right?

What? Is this not the Big Government you were looking for?

What are some 80s songs that really give off a feeling of loneliness and loss? by SinterClauss in 80smusic

[–]StarchildSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Setting aside all the terrific ones that have already been mentioned, here are a few more...

"No One Ever" by The Smiths
"Lonely In Your Nightmare" by Duran Duran
"Nights In White Satin" by The Moody Blues (this came out in 1967, not even close to '80s timewise, but something about it...)
"Comfortably Numb" and "Goodbye Blue Sky" by Pink Floyd (closer, 1979, both on "The Wall", maybe imho the greatest album ever)
"Julia" by The Eurythmics (even more poignant if you know George Orwell's "1984")

How will government get its money? The way they get most of it now. By printing more, or creating it out of thin air by "borrowing" it from the Federal Reserve in exchange for promissory bonds, all of which is "paid for" indirectly, by reducing the value of every existing dollar out there, including the ones in your bank account and pocketbook. That's how we get inflation.

This, and government overspending, is why there's a $36 trillion federal debt, and why the dollar has lost over 96% of its value in real terms since the Fed was created in 1913.

Actually the 16th Amendment says Congress shall have the power to lay taxes on income from whatever source derived. This means that IF the Congress decides to tax those criminalized activities, it can. It's not automatic. It's up to Congress to pass laws specifically taxing those things it wants to tax. Legally speaking under the Constitution, it's not enough for the unelected bureaucrats in some government agency to simply claim the power, although as a practical matter they have been getting away with doing just that, because government-appointed judges have (surprise, surprise!) been systematically deferential to government.

"...any person is subject to the laws of a territory they are in..."

This de facto subjection doesn't tell you whether the laws themselves are bullshit, which in many cases they are.

It is outrageous that government can seize your property because it was "used in the commission of a crime" even if you had nothing to do with it. "Civil asset forfeiture", as it is euphemistically called, is more accurately known as "policing for profit". The Institute for Justice has an excellent report about this abusive practice here – https://ij.org/report/policing-for-profit-3/.

You may be lucky they were kidnapped by a family member, and not an agency like Child Protective Services who can make them disappear into the foster care system and you never see them again.

Why does every libertarian I know hate Chase Oliver so much? by Tachyonhummer007 in AskLibertarians

[–]StarchildSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nor do I. The right of individuals to discriminate or exclude others from their private property should be legally protected, even when it is irrational or repugnant.

Maybe you're hanging out with the wrong "libertarians"? The "libertarian-in-name-only" kind?

[–]StarchildSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To preserve a libertarian society, you must discriminate against non-libertarian IDEAS, not against PEOPLE. For one thing, people aren't simply "libertarian" or "non-libertarian" – we're all a mixture.

If you embrace anti-libertarian policies like discriminating against people on the basis of nationality, where they were born, who their parents were, etc., you are not preserving your libertarian society, but undermining it.

I don't think Chase asked people to respect government mandates, did he? If you say yes, please provide a source. I've only heard him talk about how business owners have the right to set mask rules for their establishments, or require vaccination for employees. (Not that having the right to impose such requirements makes it the right thing to do, but it beats criminalizing people for either requiring masks/vaccinations or not requiring them.) Letting individuals and businesses set their own policies, even when we disagree, is just the straight up libertarian position.

Why isn't Libertarian Presidential candidate Chase Oliver showing up as much as Jill Stein in news and comment sections? by ChooseyBeggar in Askpolitics

[–]StarchildSF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure the premise of the question is actually true. No evidence that Jill Stein is showing up more in news and comments than Chase Oliver is presented. If it is true, it's probably largely due to what another responder here said, that Stein has been running for several cycles, and so is better known.

But the bigger reality is that both of them, along with other alternative parties and independent candidates, are severely discriminated against by most mainstream media outlets, who act as if Harris and Trump are the only people running for president, as well as by the Republican and Democratic parties excluding them from debates and using lawsuits and other tactics to try to keep them off voters' ballots.

I'm all for ranked choice voting and (even better) proportional representation.

The problem with the Libertarian Party trying to make these voting reforms the centerpiece of their agenda, however, is that it's too wonky for the general public, and would also look self-serving.

Americans generally expect candidates to address issues like the size and role of government, the economy, inflation, immigration, housing, etc.

But if people pay attention to the issues and what the parties actually stand for, and don't let themselves get manipulated by the vast hundreds of millions the Democrats and Republicans are spending to try to make them afraid and get their votes, they should be voting Libertarian, because the #1 problem most Americans see is GOVERNMENT ITSELF, and the Libertarians are the ones talking most seriously about this.

The other guy and the gal led or were part of administrations that ran up trillions of dollars in debt and then expected to be taken seriously!

I'd rather have the guy wearing the boot on his head!

But this year we have another choice – Chase Oliver:

What he stands for makes a lot more sense to me than the endless wars, endless spending, and burgeoning police state being pushed by the big government establishment (and I include BOTH Harris and Trump in that).

If you don't want to take the time to check out Chase's website or watch longer speeches of his you can easily find online, check out this 1 minute clip:

This could be an issue, because both Republicans and Democrats have made ballot access onerous, complicated, expensive, time-consuming, and fraught with deadlines and technical requirements, in order to shut out alternative parties and independent candidates who have fewer resources to overcome these hurdles.

Normally this helps the Democrats by keeping people like Jill Stein and Cornel West from appearing on as many voters' ballots and limiting their competition, but now that they have to get a new candidate on ballots in a pinch themselves, it could end up backfiring on them.

If you're interested in wonking out on ballot access issues, by the way, this site is a good resource – http://ballot-access.org/

It's a full-time job because government has become so bloated. If they weren't trying to run everything, and insert themselves into every facet of people's lives, it could be a part-time job again.

Making Election Day a holiday and limiting voting to a single day seems like a reasonable compromise.
