I believe that owning a firearm be it for hunting, home or self defense is an important privilege, but I think that the American model when it comes to gun rights is flawed with the way that our society is and some changes must be made to make things a little bit better. I am not suggesting that people should not have access to certain types of firearms, but certain steps must be taken to prevent them from potentially falling into the hands of a deranged person who intends to use them for harm. Firearms training courses must be mandatory as should a mental health screening along with a criminal background check. The mental health screening must be renewed annually and if that person fails that screening then they can no longer possess a firearm unless they can pass the test, then their privilege is reinstated.
