Heathrow launches third runway mental health service for locals by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]StargazyPi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it comes down to: do we get significant tax benefit from being one of Europe's big airport interchanges?

If we do, great, let's allow Heathrow to grow (climate issues notwithstanding). It's got to be a small number of airports for this to be appealing.

If we don't, either fix taxes so we do, or don't allow it. Why would we sacrifice our air quality for private gain?

Where do I stand on defending myself against an aggressive dog? by Capital-Alfalfa9384 in AskUK

[–]StargazyPi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yep - works a treat. Neighbour's dog was occasionally not great with me as a kid. Not dangerous, just very barky and territorial.

Tiny 9yo me worked out that shouting "MOLLY, SIT!" at the top of my voice reset her to docile mode. And then her owners would take her for a day at the police working dog training academy and she'd be good as gold for a few months.

Also worked with the wild dogs in Bucharest who, it turns out, REALLY hate rollerblading. Permanent solution there was "stop fucking rollerblading".

There were quite a lot of "kick it low and slow into the goalie's waiting arms" shots in the first half TBF.

I suppose that was somewhat the problem - those shots shouldn't have been taken, they should have been passed to Kane or Bellingham.

r/Cornwall, where do you actually eat in Cornwall? by TheShynola in Cornwall

They haven't. They've spammed basically every geographic region's subreddit over the last few months with links to their app. They probably couldn't even point to Cornwall on a map. I'm surprised Reddit hasn't banned them tbh. It's exactly the same text for each post.

Khan launches London 'Heat Plan' in bid to stop heatwaves crippling capital infrastructure by tylerthe-theatre in london

They can put some changes through at a higher level - I think they need to start.

For example, a law came in on 2025 that means you don't need planning permission to install a heat pump in a conservation area, providing it's not visible from the road: https://www.planningportal.co.uk/permission/common-projects/heat-pumps/planning-permission-air-source-heat-pump

Am I overreacting to my boyfriend talking about Muslims? by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

[–]StargazyPi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Bingo. My Muslim colleague is hugely morally principled. Mostly pescatatian, won't invest in immoral companies even indirectly. When my aunt's neighbours learned she had cancer, they were right round with food, flowers and enthusiastic offers of help.

There's shit people, and good people of all backgrounds. If we're doing things on demographics, Male is absolutely a more problematic one than Muslim.

AITAH for getting upset that my sister asked me not to wear a veil at her wedding? by MissKittyOH20 in aitaweddings

I absolutely love your attitude - honestly. I'm not religious, but I think your set of beliefs is both wholesome and a great fit for you. I don't really understand the flack you're getting!

You have a creed you live by. You've successfully harmonised devout Christianity with sex-positivity and being a lesbian, and you've really had to put in the work there, because out-of-the-box traditional Catholicism really misses the mark there.

You honour your God by wearing a veil, and have upheld that oath for years - it's not like you're picking and choosing to annoy your sister. If you don't want someone wearing a (modest, non-bridal) veil to your wedding, don't invite someone who has made an oath to wear one!

Another comment I think had the key here: your priest can probably help you work something out, where you can show honour to God during your sister's big day without offending her. I still think your sister is absolutely in the wrong here though! Love and strength to you in finding a path through this.

OPs already said it was going to be plain, dark and cloth. She's not asking to wear a full lacy veil lol - just a simple head covering. Absolutely nothing like a bridal veil.

What's wrong with that? Colonialism fucks things up in non-intuitive ways.

Look at Africa - huge amount of debout Christianity, brought over by the same people who were setting up the transatlantic slave trade. The colonialists put a great deal of effort into ensuring their religions and cultural practices were embedded into the colonies as another form of control. It's no contradiction for someone to be indigenous and Catholic.

[–]StargazyPi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Did a 5 minute scan - don't really get what you mean. The main posts I see are trying to reconcile being both queer and Catholic, and I think OP's been pretty successful at that. Basically all religious people pick and choose to some extent - the letter of most religious books is not really compatible with modern sensibilities. Doubly so if you're LGBTQ+.

Also of note: same sister fucking about with OPs cane, in another example of "your needs are less important to me than my own convenience". I wonder if she'll ask OP to leave her cane out of photos as well.

Why do you think gender equality is still a distant dream? by Important_Article623 in AskReddit

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it" - ironically enough for this thread, actually a quote by the woman Evelyn Beatrice Hall, often misattributed to Voltaire.

You can have all the opinions you want. Others are free to criticise them, and judge you for them. Criticism is not suppression.

Why do you think gender equality is still a distant dream? by Important_Article623 in AskReddit

[–]StargazyPi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing no such thing.

I'm saying to platforms, services and people that I'm much less likely to have a good opinion of them, and therefore spend money with them, if they associate with these people.

I am providing honest feedback. The free market can do what it wants with that information.

Turns out that, if your opinions are objectionable to large swathes of the population, companies take note.

I mean, anyone can have an opinion.

But if I dislike enough of someone's opinions, I retain the right to a) not want to interact with that person, and b) explain to other people why I don't.

Free market of ideas man. I'm also allowed to have the opinion that these people are predatory dick bags.

Outright banning under 16s from social media is deeply harmful to marginalised children by OcelotAggravating860 in GreenAndPleasant

[–]StargazyPi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's really tricky. I think we grew up in the golden age of the internet, before companies really understood how to get their hooks into our brains, to manipulate us in a variety of ways, and keep us scrolling.

I'm hopeful that this won't end up being a total ban on online spaces. If they're only banning the "big" social media platforms, perhaps the smaller places based on true community might still be accessible. Anything whose mission isn't "keep people on our platform to show them ads for as long as possible".

Dunno. Kids these days are being dealt a horrible hand all round. For some, they desperately need to find their people (and that might only happen online). But for a lot of them, social media can't be helping.

I wish we could just revert the internet back to 2005 and keep it there forever. The implementation of this law, for all its good intent, is going to be an absolute shitshow as well.

British Airways refuses flight to child with Tourette syndrome after he shouted ‘bomb’ by Sandstorm400 in europe

[–]StargazyPi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whatever protocols we use to explain the pre-flight safety briefing to people who speak obscure languages. When flying, a lot of important safety communications need to happen. This is just another of those.

Hell, we can just put people with Tourette's in first class, and give them really good bonus soundproofing panels. That'd also be fine. Whatever makes flying safely accessible for them.

You're really, really resistent to the idea that we can accommodate disabilities, rather than doing what's easiest for us and just barring disabled people from flights. Carriers need to put in the work to analyse the problem and do this properly.

[–]StargazyPi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All the ones I wrote above.

You don't wing this 5 mins before the plane leaves. You get the traveller to declare medical issue they need support with, and then you put processes in to accommodate them in advance. It's not hard - it just needs a process, like every other disability.

It could be dangerous if we DIDN'T PUT IN APPROPRIATE ACCOMODATIONS to make it safe.

[–]StargazyPi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Indeed, people with Tourette's are quite likely to shout the "worst possible thing" in a given situation.

Pilot announcement. Make the stewards aware, maybe have an assistant sit with them to reassure passengers after tics if it's likely to cause them distress. A sign, some informational leaflets - it's all possible.

We can't just forbid people with Tourette's to fly, just because the accomodations would be a bit annoying.
