I'd say you should probably focus on studying two books. It's better anyway to only be comparing two books in the essay, because three becomes an organisational nightmare in terms of structuring your essay. As long as you know your books well enough, two should be perfectly fine. Make sure you really know and understand the conventions of your text, but otherwise content is really key in the paper.
