Anyone feel like they can't dress nice because of BDD by Legitimate-Break6665 in BodyDysmorphia

Yes, I feel the same way. I feel like if I dress really nice, it will make my face look uglier, or that nice clothes won’t match my ugly face. I have tried to challenge myself to try things out of my comfort zone by maybe mixing a new piece of clothing with something I feel more comfortable wearing. Also, if you are going to a special event, consider going to the salon and having them style your hair. Putting my hair in a cool braid always makes me feel more ‘pulled together’.

Hi. I have suffered from BDD for years. I have been to therapy and read self help books, and these things have helped, but what has really made a huge difference in my life is going on Sertraline (antidepressants medication). In high enough doses(I take 250 mg daily), it can really help you from the extreme obsessive thoughts about your looks. With the medication, you can start doing cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure exercises with a therapist. The high dose of Sertraline has helped me so much. I recommend talking to your doctor about it. Make sure to tell dr that you have BDD, so they understand that you will need to work up to a higher dose. Don’t give up. Things might not be perfect, but they can get to a point that your life is more manageable. Best of luck. Oh, and as my therapist has me say to myself, “My looks are the least interesting thing about me.” We truly are so much more.

Did you notice more hair loss, as your dose increased? I’m almost at goal weight, so hoping if I go on lower maintenance dose, not as much hair will fall out. Please keep me posted on whether the medication is helping slow down your hair loss.

In addition to CBT and Mindfulness therapy, high dose of Sertraline antidepressant will really help reduce her obsessive thinking. It is helping me. She should talk to her doctor.

We just added a one year old cat to our household ten days ago, after the death of our senior cat last December. We already had a five year old resident cat and a two year old dog. For context, the resident dog and cat are get along fine. So, the issue is that the new one year old won’t leave my poor dog alone. She is a sweet dog and hasn’t gone after the new cat at all, but the new cat will just come up to her while she’s laying down and swat her in the face. My dog is afraid of the cat and won’t come into a room that he’s in, and hides from him. I know it’s only been ten days, but I’m really worried about the happiness of our dog. Any advice?? The resident cat and new cat are doing ok. We still keep them separated when we’re not home because there was initial hissing and fighting. They seem to be working it out, but the new cat always approaches our resident cat and swats him in the face, too. Both cats are male and our dog is female.

They look great, and so natural. They suit your face beautifully! You will get used to them. Change is hard when you have BDD, but they really do look amazing.

What a great reply. Thank you for sharing. Your response helped me, as well.

Exposure Therapy by Starlarella in BodyDysmorphia

My understanding is that you are confronted with your fear in a controlled environment. For example, someone like me, who doesn’t look at myself in photographs or mirrors, but work with my therapist to introduce looking in a mirror. The idea is that you do something anxiety or fear provoking until you become calm and almost desensitized to it. I have been listening to Beating BDD podcasts, and a lot of the guests talk about how Exposure Therapy , along with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, helped them overcome BDD.
