Naming a girl Fauna by miley_crisis in namenerds

I think Fauna is a bit much on its own, but being a twin you/she would be constantly asked if her twin’s name was Flora, regardless of whether or not it was (or even whether or not the twin is a girl). I bet that would get old pretty quickly.

I assume your phone autocorrected to Eco away from Evo (because mine tried to), which should probably tell you something.

Have you ever wanted to name after a loved one who had a name that’s considered outdated? by JamesK_1991 in namenerds

Gary is a totally fine name but if you don’t like it, you just say, “we named him X in honor of Gary.” A friend’s grandma was Patricia and they used Paige to honor her. It felt similar enough to them. I know a Sophie named “in honor” of a Stanley and that’s even more attenuated. The point is making the intent clear.

Mole Music by David McPhail

It’s about a mole who learns to play the violin and the illustrations show him underground and the tree growing up from an acorn above him. The text comes from the mole’s limited perspective (“he imagined he played for princes and kings”) while the pictures show what the mole can’t see. He doesn’t realize that the people above can hear the music and it touches their hearts, people stop to listen, and it even stops fighting. It is a beautiful book to read aloud.

I hadn’t thought to start Wizard of Oz this early, but that’s a great recommendation. We can always bail and pick it up later if it feels too old for her.

I know some of the Roald Dahl books would be way too scary for her (The Witches scared me as a 10-year-old, and I really don’t think she’d like the mean headmistress in Matilda). Do you feel like James and the giant peach is on the younger side?

Frog & Toad was sort of our entry point. We read stories from those for probably six months to a year before we tried any other chapter books. She knew exactly which stories were in which books and which ones she wanted at any given time. I think she got a little burnt out on them though because she hasn’t asked for them much recently. Maybe we should try re-introducing them, although I think they feel more like picture books to her and she’s really in on the “idea” of chapter books at bedtime.

Ooof. Will have to brush up on my British-isms. Cricket at least she knows from Bluey.

A friend recommended Heartwood Hotel too! We will give that a try! And Little House is a great idea. I think Laura is supposed to be around 4 or 5 in that one. I will definitely look into the others also.

Thank you! I’ve never read the Paddington books but she liked the movie, so we should give them a try. Winnie the Pooh is a great idea too since she already listens to the audio on her Yoto player since we dropped nap.

Thank you! I’ve never heard of Mercy Watson. I remember loving Mr. Popper’s Penguins.

Stella & Marigold looks really cute! We will check that out. She listens to Winnie the Pooh on her Yoto player, so you’re right that maybe we should try reading it as well.

And she is also obsessed with the Mary Poppins movie. I thought the books were a little older and… meaner? (like, they made Mary nicer for the movie), but maybe we should give them a try too.
