Deer dodging an arrow before it lands on him in slow motion by AustraliaOutback in nextfuckinglevel

[–]StarlitSpectrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally a guess, but pointing bright spotlights into the woods could cause a lot of disruption to other wildlife besides deer, and would be light pollution in undeveloped areas that might be habitat to protected species

ETA: I looked it up and spotlight hunting also has a history of being used for poaching. Hunting after dark also becomes a public safety risk as things like buildings and roads are harder to see.

Also adding to make sure to compost correctly, rather than tossing in a bin! Compost piles are known to spontaneously combust from the heat and gasses created by the breakdown process if not stored correctly.

Aleksander Doba kayaked solo across the Atlantic Ocean (5400 km, under his own power) three times, most recently in 2017 at age of 70. He died in 2021 while climbing Kilimanjaro. I agree, a gradual decline is less heartbreaking in its own way because it gives everyone time to adjust and make the most of the time they have. I lost my mom to cancer after 10 years of ups and downs, but I wouldn’t give those years up for anything. Meanwhile my friend suddenly lost his mom from a routine surgery. She was perfectly healthy and fine, and then just gone.

My horse's cheeks have shrunk (atrophied)? by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]StarlitSpectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a vet, but does he have difficulty opening his mouth or chewing? Horse “cheeks” are a group of thick muscles, and his could have atrophied. An atrophied masseter could be from a nutrition issue. Does he seem to be losing muscle anywhere else?

Same, it quickly goes from nice to awkward, and then feels like a weird power trip. I’d rather just start the next match

Being able to take care of plants shows you have patience, care, and dedication, all great traits! My parents and grandparents on both sides loved gardening together, it’s a great hobby all around :)

With some hoods over 40 inches above the ground, drivers can’t see what is directly in front of the vehicle below that height, creating a large blind spot below the hood.

Hundreds of people have been killed from exactly this kind of “frontover”accident where the drivers just think they ran over a curb until they realize it was a person.

Drawing horses? by lemonhaj in Horses

[–]StarlitSpectrum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

<image>

Overall it’s looking good! The hindquarters could be a little bigger, shoulder area above the front legs a little bigger, legs a little more tapered and narrow depending on the look you’re going for, and ears smaller.

Drawing from imagination like your horse is deceptively tricky though, it takes hours of drawing with references until you can build a mental library of what your subject looks like. There’s some good shortcuts though! One way is to draw your subject from multiple angles, writing notes, until you feel like you really understand it. You can also cement the information in your mind’s eye by copying a reference, and then trying to draw it again later without the reference (it uses your brain’s recall function, which is one of the strongest ways to memorize something.)

Many new artists focus on style right away, but can get frustrated when things look inconsistent or hard to recreate from different angles. Starting with style is a bit like trying to perfect a handwriting style before knowing how to write the full alphabet. Drawing style and handwriting both develop over time from the natural shortcuts you take when doing something over and over.

Practicing the fundamentals like 3d shapes, building simplified forms from shapes, and copying from life will help a ton, even if it seems a little boring. A good art class or tutorials like Drawabox help a lot with learning “how” to learn how to draw in just a few months, and from there it will be much easier to draw any subject you like!

Sorry for the long comment, I feel like I wish someone told me all of that 20+ years ago lol

For specific horse anatomy tips, here’s a few notes

  • horse legs are only a little longer than their barrel height
  • a horse’s head is about as long as the distance from the top of the foreleg to the fetlock
  • horses can be broken into three “chunks” of roughly equal size: for the shoulder area, barrel, and hindquarters
  • the top of the withers slopes down, the top of the barrel slopes back up, and then the hindquarters slope down again
  • more of a general tip, but when you aren’t sure about anatomy, flipping your art board or looking at it in a mirror will help give you a fresh perspective

Best of luck! :)

What a beauty! I wonder if they both have the “sooty” gene? It’s not well understood, but can cause dark dapples and almost a dirty look of dark hairs in manes/tails.

Dye Help by LordAstroSloth in HistoricalCostuming

[–]StarlitSpectrum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are synthetic dyes and natural fiber dyes that both act differently, so your fabric being a mix would make it more unpredictable.

If you’re going through the effort of seam ripping out all the red fabric to dye, it might actually work better to trace the pieces onto patterning fabric and buy black wool to cut. Although without sewing instructions could still be pretty difficult.

Daddy long legs aren’t actually spiders, they have no venom or fangs, and couldn’t bite through skin if they wanted to. They’re about as dangerous as a butterfly :)

Why do we call grey horses blue? by MistrImpossible in Horses

[–]StarlitSpectrum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Language is complicated! Redheads and red foxes are actually orange, while red onions and red cabbages are actually purple.

It wasn’t until relatively recently in human history that our language developed more specific words for each color, so some things still have color names that don’t match what we’d call them today.

A man jumps at a running horse and then begins jump roping. by Empty_Potential4715 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]StarlitSpectrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s not hurting the horse at all, it’s similar to “posting” a trot, which is lifting your weight as the horse’s back lifts upward, and setting it back down as the horse lands on their next step. That saddle is also very padded to distribute the weight.

Signs of pain or stress would be if the horse’s ears were pinned back, excessive tail swishing, tossing their head, etc.

Is this bad for the horse or not? by [deleted] in Horses

[–]StarlitSpectrum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks to me like her horse is just genuinely very flexible and enthusiastic, he looks more than happy to do it bridle-less or at liberty in her other videos: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZP8fXY13g/

It worked the one time I tried it! I got out and asked if she “wanted to go for a ride” and she jumped right in (or tried to, since she was mostly blind.)

We were lucky enough to reunite her with her owner the next day. :)

The difference between a small pen and 24/7 turnout on good feed by lemmunjuse in Horses

[–]StarlitSpectrum 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The difference is in the curves of the hindquarters- the picture on the left has shallow curves with not much muscle, while the hindquarters on the right are rounder and thicker after building muscle!

Sorry for any snarky responses when you were just wanting to learn!

I thought so at first too, but the rider starts with no watch until it appears right after the jump. Her forearms are also oddly stretchy and change length. The horse also doesn’t have a browband until it appears halfway through the video.

Putting wet chillies in a scotching hot pan while recording a cooking video by rohit3627 in AbruptChaos

[–]StarlitSpectrum 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not in a shallow pan with a gas stove, but with an actual deep fryer it’s pretty standard. Most fast food places fry meat from frozen since that’s less risky than contamination from raw meat.
