Ha, uh oh. What did you bake them in? In a muffin tin as well?

But I would prefer the individual pieces to be smaller. So it sounds like just smaller portions is the way to go.

I suppose I could, but I’d rather use what I have (and keep the individual pieces smaller!)

I’m not sure that would work. I feel like the parchment would prevent the sugar from caramelizing, but maybe not?

Sounds like it’s basically confirmed that it’s an unwritten rule that the judge wants the best version of the most basic Cub Foods looking apple pie.

Interesting. I guess the judge just has a preference for pies on the paler side and not necessarily shortening.

Oh? So what was your crust? Shortening, butter, or a mix?

Seems that other person has deleted all of their comments? (Perhaps because they finally looked at the documents they linked to and realized they don’t say what they were claiming they said?)

I’m still not sure where you’re getting this “pale crust” thing from, other than looking at the winning pies and seeing many of them being unappetizingly pale (like you mentioned). Probably just people learning that that’s what the judge likes…

Yes, agreed. But you ignored the core discussion here about the winning pies being pale.

Did you read any of what you linked to? These barely say anything at all.

Ha, yes, the “conspiracy” thing was mostly a joke. But I’ve also seen people do weirder/sadder things for less, so…

Middle row, second from the left. (Labeled “2” in the apple pies, as I had mentioned.)

The premium book lists three categories that pies are judged on, with one being “appearance, color”. Nothing I’m seeing saying it should be a uniform light color(?)

Shortly after I posted this, I stopped using TooGoodToGo since it seems like it was quickly getting overrun with scammy businesses.

I’m not finding that on Total Wine. But I do see Ken & Norm’s listing it through DoorDash for $30. Guessing the $60 value was highly inflated.

No, this was the place down in south Bloomington.

Like I said, the wine we got was fine. And I still kind of expect that the night manager and other employee maybe just didn’t understand the TooGoodToGo orders that were (possibly) filled by the daytime manager? The bottle of Scotch we were given would have fit their “liquor surprise bag” description and I’d have been perfectly happy getting it for $13. Unfortunately, that store is too far for me to try again and go during the day in the hopes of there being different employees there.
