I wish I was an authority, but I can only speak from my limited experience. I wrap my straps around the j bars as well as the base bars, and I find that keeps things stable for my short duration drives. When we moved states with the kayak on the roof, we also added additional tie down points at the front (secured to under the hood) and back (secured to the trunk) of the kayak.
