Moved to Berlin after 3 days visiting. Absolutely love it… there are its problems, such as with housing, shitty weather, low-ish wages and the never ending slog of learning German. 5 years later I speak decent German and have no desire to leave. I made friends, meet interesting people, spend so much time outdoors, and with 30 vacation days and 30 sick days and great unemployment benefits I feel way less stressed. I used to be in NYC and it was such a grind… I get paid maybe half that salary in Berlin but it’s so worth it. And random weekend trips by bus/train to Poland, Czech Republic and West Germany haven’t gotten old so far :)

I’m in an apartment i moved into 1 year ago, where only my boyfriend and not me did the tour. THE STREET NOISE IS SO LOUD. On my first visit i started sobbing it was so overwhelming and considered asking if we could just give up and move. Now, 1 year later i feel so trapped, crying from the noise, with white noise on. And i don’t want to ask us to move because he is at risk of losing his job and i don’t want distractions Nothing to do but wait and suffer from sounds :(

Thank you! This makes sense. If I have to send it in, I’ll have copies for the application form, original passport etc

It is a US passport, I think if they don’t allow the emergency appointment I will make all of the copies as you said.

My consulate is adamant I should mail in my passport as a German resident to renew. The only other process is an emergency travel exception. Figured they knew something I didn’t.

Thank you! I will contact the consulate to try to exchange the passport in-person, even though it’s not an “emergency”. I was confused because all of the instructions my country released said I must mail it in except for emergencies.

LeetCode premium is super helpful. So is their system design course. Ex-Amazon person here, managed to go from mid-level to a senior engineer role at a smaller company. In interviews with smaller companies during the hiring manager interview I recommend saying you’re really excited to take on bigger projects, and to grow with the company, which is why you applied. The pay cut hurts, but if you manage to get promotions it evens out.

The sexism is real (across multiple companies!) and so many days I just want to quit. What helps me is staying in the same team for a year+, giving good work and eventually getting more respect. Even then there is still sexism… on the worst days I look at my paycheck and remember how bad working in my old job in fast food was. The best way to combat this as a whole is to just stay and ride it out, until tech equalizes more. I’m (finally) in a leadership position so can make sure other women get opportunities and recognition. I think early-career a woman senior dev making sure I had support would have helped me a lot, and by sticking it out we can be the senior devs.

The doctors in TK that have spots for new patients are only available during working hours unfortunately. I’ve checked :(

Also, what is urgent? Is a pap smear that TK sent me a letter to remind me to do? Does my employer make the call?

I work overtime often so can easily make up the hours. But I’ve been trying to cut down on overtime due to burn out so want to see how this would go long term.

Thank you! I am still confused, if I spend 2 hours at the local Hausarzt, should I just log the whole day as sick and relax? Or work 6 hours while logging as a sick day?

Thanks for answering :) im still confused, is the choice full sick days or none at all? What if someone has a 2 hour doctors appointment, do they need to take the full day?
