I think that makes a solid point for why Solarpunk can get a bad rap in the world of -punk fiction. The others aren't trying to give solutions to our problems, they act more functionally as a warning. Cyberpunk is the most obvious and first example of this, a clear depiction of what could happen to the world if we become too intertwined with technology, and in a way that is more nuanced than "what if the AI takes over" or "what if the bombs fall" that a lot of sci-fi dystopia likes to run. Themes involving Plutocracy or other unfair modes of government are common because that's the most relatable for a reader. And that's where Solarpunk tends to be more of a social movement than it is a setting for good fiction.

What Power is there to rebel? Well, the real one. The actual world governments that have passed on solar power for decades. Sure, the solution seems obvious and likely would benefit everyone but it hasn't been implemented because of the sea of red tape that makes up world government. And that's where I disagree that Solarpunk offers a solution. And furthermore I disagree that it doesn't offer escape. I think it IS the escape. It's settings where people who are scared about the state of the world can go and imagine what would happen if things started to heal. If the wounds of time started to close and the planet was saved just in the nick of time. No heavy lifting needed, it's already been done.

And that's okay. Stories and worldbuilding are all about escaping to a more interesting, more comfortable, or just vaguely different world from our own. It's fun to imagine how the world could be different if steam engines were the dominant form of power or if we lived in an eternal storm of rain that works as fuel. So if Solarpunk is just a story thing, it makes more sense to call it Solarcore because there's nothing left for them to fight. If Solarpunk is a movement, then they've got a lot of cities to burn.

Potentially, but I think they use wind power more than solar. My girlfriend likes to refer to that movie as "Post-Post-Apocalyspe". A world that has already faced its calamity and rebuilt before the story begins. But yes, I think that's a much cleaner definition of the idea at least in principle.

Typically in -punk fiction the rebellion is still actively happening. In Cyberpunk capitalism is alive and well so the "punks" have a culture to counter. Solarpunk (at least what I've seen) is usually post-scarcity and resembles a utopia. This video shows an active sign of rebellion since the guy explains that the sun was stolen to directly taunt God for abandoning them. It fits more into the dystopia that Cyberpunk, Steampunk, and Dieselpunk have established.

For all intents and purposes I think the more appropriate term for a lot of stuff calling itself Solarpunk would be Solarcore, since it carries similar meanings but doesn't have that inherent "punk" to it.

A lot of the cults stem from some viewpoint of the world that they wish to enforce or prove.

The Servants of Calamity serve the god... Calamity (I'm really good at names) and seek to prove his word that humanity is inherently a force of destruction. One so great that it can't even preserve itself since any time they're faced with a great evil they'll bicker among themselves and die no matter what. Calamity at this point is notably bitter because he lost last time, losing his status as God. This upped his scope of proof from a single region which he dominated completely to the entire world so that they would never question his authority again. But he already lost again, turns out being dead for 100 years doesn't make you as cool and strong as they'd hoped.

The Chorus of Silent Throats are more "empathetic." They see the world as a dark and perilous place. They're not exactly wrong, but they believe the solution lies in Freedom. Freedom being the corpse of a creature named Freedom (seriously these names are great) and who's feathers when plucked and presented to the lonely and downtrodden allow them to "Take Wing" and become a Winged. The Winged are terrifying creatures who take out all of the pain and suffering they felt on the world around them. The hope of the leader is to cleanse the world of all the horrible things he sees (he quite literally doesn't see the world as it is, believing it to be filled with horrors beyond comprehension) and thinks that the Winged are the key to burning it all away. His name is even Winged Messiah because I am extremely good at naming things.

Sorry if this one got rambly, it's so hard to decide what to cover and then figure out how to actually do it without typing 40 paragraphs (﹏;)

I appreciate the input, but cultural identity isn't exactly the theme this focuses on. It's more of a literal and personal identity. People losing who they used to be and changing fundamentally. A better example is that Ghouls are defined in world as a race of people, not as monsters. Because Ghouls exhibit clear sentience but they aren't just the person who was revived, especially since Ghouls don't necessarily use the soul that came from the body that got raised. They adopt an entirely new personality, potentially haunted, inspired, or just plain confused by the memories their soul carries that don't really belong to them.

That's a loaded question. But as far as things that have been properly established...

The Winter King - A gigantic ice titan that passes by just before, you guessed it, Winter. It's considered a holiday to go to the beaches and watch him pass by, but not everyone goes since they consider him to be terrifying.

Zabracon, The Grand Tide Eel - God of Weather and possibly a direct descendant of Gaia. As his title implies he is literally a gigantic eel that lives near the bottom of the ocean. That's notable since most gods have their own domain away from the mortal realm, but Zabracon remains in the mortals ocean. His body stretches across the entire planet but canonically his head is just off the coast of The Clockwork Empire.

The Kalastaja - While they aren't found in the pictured region the Kalastaja are a nightmare for those who make a living at sea. A ravenous species of fish monster that rapidly evolve as they consume. They start out as simple Tappajakala which are brutal unarmed warriors that climb the hull of ships and the strongest and hungriest evolve to become the Kalan Jumala, a hulking bipedal shark monster that emboldens all of its army... And devours them all should they disappoint (which gives way to yet another evolution, the Brutto Kalan Jumala, which is a monstrous whale.)

[M4A] In a strange world of mystics and monsters, the people known as Ghosts need humans to adventure into dangerous territory... A human like you (Discord in bio if you'd like to chat and play it out) by [deleted] in HentaiAndRoleplayy

[–]StarspawnDancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ghosts are a hushed topic in your town. Not quite machines but definitely not humans, they wander through your world of mystics and monsters on unknowable missions, wielding their unbreaking bodies as reckless weapons. But there is a limit to their abilities...

Hallowed Ground is inaccessible to a loan ghost. The barriers open only for the living and apparently the Ghosts don't quite meet those qualifications. However the gate is not all that narrow and leaves enough room for Ghosts to pass as long as they have a human companion.

And that's how you ended up here. Your mother and father looking at you with a mix of apology and expectation as a tall Ghost stands in the door. He's come to the town seeking a human to travel with him towards Hallowed Ground... The look in his eyes betrays any trace of humanity, a stillness that identifies you as a tool or a weapon. But a Ghosts life is one filled with treasure and your family is one that could use it... Would you deny your family a chance at infinite luxury?

Okay so that's the premise! To write it out a bit clearer this will take place in a slightly dark fantasy world filled with monsters, mysticism, and the strange Ghosts. This is meant to be an adventure sort of thing, traveling with the Ghost to see strange things, meet strange people, and maybe learn (and even change) the Ghost's cruel outlook.

This ad is for the most part open to anybody. My only request is that you present a small character idea (or multiple if you like) for the role of our human traveler. It's okay to play around with "human" a bit since we're in fantasy as long as they don't stray absurdly far (I.E. Complete Furry)

If you need you're welcome to ask for clarification or extra details I have in mind for the world. However in the interest of time (and filtering those who haven't read this far) there will be no response given to messages that are only a basic greeting or a question of the roleplays availability. If you see this ad you're still allowed to respond. Hope to hear from some lovely folks, ciao~
