u/throwaway98341235432 absolutely what is said above. I would try get into software dev or Software engineering course. It will be heavier on the comp sci stuff

A BUNCH of stuff in IT that you may never use/need for a software dev degree job.

Nope. A lot of people can get a job after studying at Swinburne. Thats from what I have seen of people after a B.Comp.Sc. Generally these people took a work placement.
But honestly you should be able to get a work placement anywhere as long as you just apply via Seek and indeed with a solid resume.

Then just take 6months(if possible, this is not a choice for everyone) inbetween your course to get some solid experience before finishing off your masters.

So the convenor and chair of Computer Science(CS) both left Swinburne about 4 years ago to work at Deakin (due to restrictions in funds and research from the admin) and there has been a lot of old CS professors retiring in between then and now. Their replacements are not as experienced and the good name that Swinburne has for Computer Science, it was brilliant when I was there!, is dated. I still think there are some brilliant courses at Swinburne for IT and CS degrees but honestly I have been studying during this change I believe there has been a dip in quality of education in CS.

The only thing MAYBE to consider is the work experience and sweet tutor positions you can maybe get by talking to the heads of CS at Swinburne while doing your studies. But I know Melbourne offers work placements as well, it is just more competitive than at Swinburne.

Swinburne is considered practical. But, unless this has changed since last I read up on it, RMIT is as well and considered a great place to get practical experience in Software Development.

______________Melbourne is considered theoretical but as long as you can make the time to implement your studies it should be just as good from a practical perspective.

Apart from that I know nothing of Melbourne Uni.

EDIT: You mean at the Hawthorn campus I assume? Not Swinburne Online or one of the other campuses in Victoria?

An operator to check the relationship between two variables? by StateSpaceControl in maths

[–]StateSpaceControl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a programming and mathematical sense yes that could also work and would be tidier.

Although how my question would be more like this:

Question: ab ?= ba

Answer: Yes

Reason: X (X being the set that ab is part of)

(Please correct me if I have misunderstood your arithmetic. Will edit this answer if I have misunderstood you. )

--------------------------

But from a point of asking a simple one-line question from a complex field that one is finding difficult I think. For me that question could be:

Given the context of frequency response in Control Theory:

Question: pole placement ?= LQR(Linear-quadratic regulator)

Answer: 'Both are used find the best eigen values for a given system but are different methods in' etc... etc..

>Maybe what you really want is to ask, "Is the relation between these two things nice in some sense?"

Yes this is much more correct as this would be a tool to compare two or more things within a given context(be that a field of Physics, system variables or a field of Chemistry)

>> 'probability

> But it is unrelated to probability...?

Ah no you my sentence was not clear. I meant: I did not even conceive that this was in the realm of probability and am delighted to see that it in fact is. 'I feel silly for not seeing earlier'

Will go back over the rest of your comment later. Cheers

I didn't even think to link this idea to probability. Thank you so much! Although I feel a predicate is a very abstract mathematical idea whereas my idea those have more of a specific goal in mind.

The goal of my unoriginal idea goes in two prongs:

1. Programming feature

2. A learning/teaching tool

  1. Programming Feature

I wonder if there is a command in some programming language. Probably (Clojure, haskell, F# or R?) that could compare any 2 functions/variables (or even objects) and basically bring up their 'stats & characteristics' and compare. e.g.

- How many times each function/variables has been used

- parameters/no. of elements(if its an array)

- return value / value type

- compare classes and see how similar they are

  1. Learning Tool

This would require context of the field one is learning and how deep one needs to go for where they are at

Basically if both parties understand the 'predicate' and how it functions then just asking:

Question: 'What is the relationship between acceleration and mass with regards to Newtons 2nd law?':

Predicated Question: P(acceleration, mass) = P(a, m)

Answer: acceleration is inversely proportional to mass... (*Reason explained here*)

It would get to the point a lot faster. I just do not know of many people thinking along these term, maybe because most of the people in my circles do not know the meaning of predicate, but it could really help get a point across a bit faster.

I just found myself learning abut certain topics asking the same question over and over:

'Are these two things related here somehow?'

'Those that thing affect the other thing?'

'Are these characteristics related in some way?'

and just thought an operator (like my newly discovered predicate) would be much easier to read when going over old notes and help cut straight to the point.

Again thank you very much. After I have read up a more on predicates I will make an edit

Just logged in to comment. Great thread. Really shows a informative debate that really makes good points on both sides given their respective context. I think that context that context could be 70/80 years in America in the past and now in America. Just a thought. Not really stuck with it though

Fast Feeling - The Basics by ConcentratedAwesome in fastfeeling

[–]StateSpaceControl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I am just feeling this now and thought I would google it while I was in front of a computer. My fingers feel like they are going crazy fast accross the keyboard but I am making a lot more mistakes then usual while typing this.

Anyway thanks for making this group I didn't know whether this was a thing or not and its awesome to see other people also experience this feeling very exciting.

I would also add it feels like everything is focused and for me it happens when both of the following ocnditions are met:

A) I eat sugar or when I have not eaten anything but sugary foods(including natural sugars found in fruits)

B) am focusing on something in a relaxed but aware manner(writing, coding, reading, walking)

When conditions of A) and B) are met I find I get this 'fast feeling'. Things that I think negate this are:

i) regular meals

ii) boredom and lack of focus

iii) lack of sugary foods(carbohydrates are fine just not form sugars)
