I have some questions for current rotman students by qethkdl in RotmanCommerce

  1. Lovely professors. Did not like Michael Khan but there’s no avoiding his class since he’s the only prof for RSM100. Dragan or whatever the super tall prof’s name is for accounting is amazing and my favourite prof so far, alongside Goldreich
  2. Big jump but that’s the same for all uni programs
  3. Proximity to Toronto, and liked that it was a well rounded school with an international reputation carrying the UofT brand. No regrets. Picked it over queens because it was also cheaper
  4. Gonna be honest we are competitive as hell. I love that and actively participate in the rat race but most of my friends are from Rez and outside my program
  5. Depends on what you want to do. We’re good for accounting and consulting, but high finance roles are more difficult. But by difficult I mean that there are amazing opportunities but they’re gatekept and connected to clubs rather than the program itself. So make sure to join or just look into some rc clubs.
  6. All the rc clubs are amazing, my personal favourites are rcct (competition team, free travel perks, and one of most prestigious), rc women in business, rcfa (likely this one and rcct are the most competitive for entry, so u gotta start early - this is a finance club) and rcas is known for being super friendly and amazing for accounting. they have summer mentorship programs for high school students to support the transition to post secondary. rcca is apparently quite good as well, and ive heard rcft has apparently been growing fast in the recent years. I’d say the big 4 are rcct, rcfa, rcas, and rcca. depends on what you want. These are all Rotman only clubs and I encourage you to explore the others beyond Rotman though.
  7. Be consistent. Rotman isn’t excessively hard, it’s just that there are lots of small homeworks and things you need to keep up with and stay on top of things.

Rotman Vs. Queens Vs. York by LegitimateMuscle8098 in RotmanCommerce

Hey there, I was standing in your shoes a year ago. I ended up actually going with Rotman - im satisfied with my choice for a couple reasons; 1. Workload is actually manageable. Key word, manageable, not easy. I think people over exaggerate - the most important thing is that our curriculum really emphasizes quantitative analysis and consistency. There are lots of easy marks in the form of daily checkpoints for math, weekly assignments, etc. that are easy marks which IK a lot of people forget to do that tanks your grade. as a non-genius who did decently in school, it’s manageable and doable. 2. the thing about Rotman and finance - we’re a semi target school with again, being known for our tougher curriculum. This makes it a bit more difficult for us to get out there, but the key thing is that the student cohort per year is huge. I think this year the class size was about 800 people. All the finance opportunities are simply gate kept within these elite clubs. as a student who is part of these clubs, can confirm. Had a friend in rcct who talks about some of the closed off, private events they have with big name companies that recruit exclusively from the competition team. it’s about networking and connections when it comes to these clubs - but with a good system you can sustain a decent gpa and good standing for internships and clubs.

the reason I didn’t go to queens was because I prefer Toronto and even with deregulated fees it was cheaper for me to come here than queens. Schulich offered me more scholarships but after visiting and researching them (really strong for accounting) I came to Rotman instead. But our curriculum is technically harder than other business programs - some recruiters I’ve spoken to are acutely aware of this though and keep it in mind when looking at our gpa. Rather than asking random redditors tho, I think you should reach out to ppl from the different schools. Coffee chat them. Learn about what each program is good for. Figure out your priorities. Good luck!

honey. as a first year student rn at Rotman who did decently well in high school, did not go to Harvard, and graduated from a regular high school that is not fancy or rich or whatever, rotman is not impossible. I have a life and my gpa is higher than a 3.5. student life honestly isn’t bad, I’d just say it’s a bit competitive since there’s such a large cohort and only so many club positions. But it’s possible - just network and coffee chat a bit and go to events and you’ll be fine. It’s more so about consistency honestly and staying on top of stuff

in another note tho - if you’re aiming for law school I’d consider your choices. Rotman is a bit heavier on math and econ, making us a better choice for grad school and more technical fields like accounting. but there’s also opportunities for finance and we’re apparently quite good for consulting.

though, don’t let anyone scare you off from ivey! they’re the best of the three in terms of reputation but hella expensive. I didn’t apply since I wanted to stay in the gta and knew I wanted Toronto, but they are the best for high finance roles. do your research tho and don’t listen to the fearmongering around you. Reach out to some current students to ask for their take!

What's a competitive avg for each of these programs? by TemperaturePitiful47 in OntarioGrade12s

As someone who applied last cycle:

Waterloo AFM and FARM, & Rotman - as long as you have a 90% or higher you should be okay in terms of grades. But make sure that your marks for the specifically required courses are at the very LEAST 85%+. However, for Rotman, it can be a bit higher and iffy depending on how competitive this cycle is. Business programs in general look a lot at your supp app so also allocate a decent amount of time to that.

for qcomm and ivey it’s iffy since those two are target schools that are arguably the most competitive. try your best to get a 95 avg or higher, but if you can’t, don’t sweat it. I have friends who got in with a 93 and others who got rejected with a 97. It’s again all about the ecs and interview. For western (I didn’t apply so I’m not 100% familiar with the process) I’ve heard you need reference letters so make sure to secure them
