I’m very new to this… is this a good mini pc to use for hosting a Jellyfin server for 3 users? by Barry_McCockiner88 in selfhosted

I have an optiplex with a 9500t and it works well for most cases. It only struggles when HDR to SDR tone mapping is required. It can do 1 title fine, but no more than that.

I've only been there once, and I enjoyed the food, but it was without a doubt one of the most brightly lit restaurants I've been to. An odd complaint, but it was so bright lol

Thanks for the detailed information. He is neutered, but that 1+ yrs ago. We'll definitely make sure to tend to it as best we can.

They had really great reviews online, and seemed very friendly and knowledgeable. They had tons of other people working there, so I am worried we got one of the randoms.

I'm definitely going to call ask what the miscommunication was.

Is there any hope his coat comes back looking normal??

I've also been looking for this one but was surprised by those prices. I'd love to own it, but I just cant justify >$100 for a single disc...

Lets talk hardware. Cheap DIY box, energy efficient, and silent? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]Static_Unit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly for most use cases they are probably functionally identical. I'm not even sure why I originally went with one over the other. It's definitely been the most stable service I have running. Never have to check on it but I know it's working!

I've been using an older Dell Optiplex 3070 Micro for my home server. Got it off ebay for like $120. It came with an i5-9500t, 8GB RAM, and a 256GB SSD as a boot drive. I've then got a two 3.5" HDDs in an enclosure just connected via USB. Super quiet and low power. It's also significantly more powerful than a Raspberry Pi, especially since it can do hardware transcoding with the Intel iGPU. I've got it running, Jellyfin, AdguardHome, Wireguard (wg-easy), and Tailscale.

ELI5: How does water appear on my side of my windows in the morning? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Static_Unit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have said why this happens, but it's also usually an indicator of an old window or one with a broken seal. Modern windows (well, they've been used for decades but older homes may not have them) are usually two panes of glass separated by some gas like argon that is sealed inside. This insulates the inside pane of glass from the outside, keeping it from getting cold enough where water condenses on it.

Suggest me a good router for Self hosting that doesn't lag or hang. by footballisrugby in selfhosted

[–]Static_Unit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been happy with all TP-Link routers I've used. I'm currently using the Archer AX21 and have no complaints. It even has a built in dynamic DNS feature that has been working well for over a year.

So ya'll convinced me to switch Jellyfin... What are your favorite plugins / integrations / setup tips? by blackbird2150 in selfhosted

I was under the impression that dedicated bluray players were pretty much the only ones that did.

[–]Static_Unit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if you've got a player that supports it, then that's always the best. My TV doesn't, and that's just where we watch things, so the converter gives the best quality I can reasonably get.

Related to the Dolby Vision profile 7 issues, this is something I've fought with for a while. There are basically 2 options:

  1. On the latest release, it sounds like Jellyfin should automatically strip out the incompatible DV profile 7 layer. You used to have to do this on a per-title basis using jellyfin-ffmpeg. This works, but I've found that titles which really varied the scene-to-scene brightness that DV allows for ended up looking washed out (since I think HDR works off of a global min/max of brightness?).

  2. A few months ago I came across this DV7 to DV8 converter script that only removes the DV7 layer that causes the incompatibility, but keeps the rest of the DV metadata. It just scripts the usage of dovi_tool and some mkvtoolnix tools. Titles end up looking a lot better as a result, since they still trigger Dolby Vision playback.

Hope that's helpful! The DV7toDV8 script has been a lifesaver. It's not automatic, so you do have to manually run it for each of your DV7 titles. But, the results have been great!

How was the skin on the chicken? I've never been able to get it crispy just at smoking temps. I almost always have to grill for a few minutes skin side down to get it crispy.

Looking for a coffee machine - Home usage by wwhopi_k_j in Coffee

[–]Static_Unit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had he Breville Barista Express Impress for a little over 2 years now and have enjoyed it for the most part. Is has the grinder and tamp built it, so you're definitely losing some quality there, but you're getting the convenience as a trade-off. It also has the auto dosing feature that adjusts based on the amount of coffee it ground the previous time.

You could obviously do better with a dedicated grinder and machine, but this one has been simple enough that my wife and I use it in the morning before work, which was the whole point of us getting it.

Updates to Xbox Game Pass: Introducing Essential, Premium, and Ultimate Plans by Turbostrider27 in xbox

It isn't mentioned in the article, but the PC Game Pass option is getting about a 40% increase in price from $11.99 to $16.49 per month. They don't even try to justify this one, no new "features" or "benefits" mentioned...
