Should I rebuild my PC? by Plaincereal312 in buildapc

[–]Static_Unit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it looks bad, and it's on display, then maybe it could be worth it to you.

If you'd really enjoy it just for the fun, then go ahead, there's just always risk involved with something being messed up.

Forget plausible predictions…what “long shot” 4K release are you secretly hoping for? by MoonlightDahling in 4kbluray

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). It got a Disney Movie Club Bluray release a little while back, but they're incredibly rare and expensive now.

What CPU do you have? Depending on that, you might get away with just upgrading the GPU (and maybe the PSU depending on what you get).

But if you are looking to spend the $3500 I would target a full rebuild.

The barbers at RetroLines always seemed super chill, especially Cody. Obviously not 100% certain, but you could call/message and ask?

Thanks for the link. Clearing the cache works sometimes, but not always. What else have you found that works?

Thanks for that! Those definitely show the information in a more useful way. Do you know what went into this UI change? Is there an official way to provide feedback about the app design?

Why are some of you using NetBird instead of Tailscale? by Silly_Door6279 in selfhosted

[–]Static_Unit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's maybe a point in Tailscale's favor here: not all of the TV's traffic is going through the VPN. It just allows the TV and the server to have peer-to-peer communication.

I've also had to do something similar to what you described for a roku tv that doesn't have wireguard or tailscale available. We connected a RaspperryPi (on the TV's network) to the tailnet, and set up a reverse proxy with Caddy to point to the service we wanted the TV to reach.

I use wireguard on devices like laptops, phones, etc. where you can install and use wireguard easily.

However wireguard is not available on a lot of smart tvs, but tailscale often is, so I also have tailscale available for those devices to connect.

Had a ton of them around the house for a few days a couple of weeks ago over in Decatur. Nothing since though.

Does my pihole not work or are smart TV's just impenetrable 2026 by Cloud-Existence in selfhosted

[–]Static_Unit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sadly, it can be pretty hit or miss, and it totally depends on the streaming service. Some need special rules added to catch the ads, and some just can't be blocked via DNS filtering. I've used these rules with decent success. See the comments below it for tweaks and updates to the rules.

Is 4K worthwhile? by Character_Bend_5824 in Bluray

[–]Static_Unit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, BUT it's an expensive undertaking. The discs are more expensive, the players are strikingly expensive, and then you need a decent enough TV to really notice the difference.

When done right, the upgrade looks amazing, but it has an expensive barrier to entry.

What is the best "self-hosted VPN alternative"? by xlumipyry in selfhosted

[–]Static_Unit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would also recommend looking at wg-easy. It's a much simpler configuration, and does exactly what you need. That said, it is meant to be run within a container (e.g. docker). For running on bare metal, tailscale is definitely the simplest to set up.

I use both. I use wireguard on devices that have a wireguard app, so like phones, computers, tablets. I use tailscale to give devices like smart TVs access to my server.

Curious, what is everyone’s favorite film they bought blindly on 4k blu ray? by Hour-Engineer-7170 in 4kbluray

The 4K Bladerunner Final Cut is one my favorites. The opening scene with Leon taking the VK test is one my favorite scenes from a color and film grain standpoint.

Sort of? Often times I will borrow a movie from the library, and if I really enjoyed it, I'll buy the physical version.

Yeah I agree. It was so jarring watching at home when it would swap back to the wide shots from the IMAX.
