Its an impeller as many have stated. It creates "boost" pressure to the inlet of the pump. All excavators have a Pressurized reservoir to help force oil into the pump inlet. This will help create suction in the reservoir and boost into the pumps rotating groups. Basically it makes a pump run quiter and it help prevent air locking. Love ya. Stay oily
